CV, U-Hi set the stage

Both University High School and Central Valley High School are opening their fall plays this week.

• At University, the drama department is presenting the musical “Oklahoma!,” Thursday, Friday, Nov. 6, 10, 12 and 13 at 7 p.m. in the school theater, 12420 E. 32nd Ave.

The cast of the show includes Ross Mumford as Curly, Chandler Watson as Laurey, Ben Bartles as Will Parker, Megan Johnson as Parker’s fiancée, Hanna Allen as Aunt Eller, and Alex Winther as Jud, the villainous farmhand.

More than 60 students will perform in this musical, including students from Bowdish and Horizon middle schools, Chester, Liberty Lake, McDonald, Ponderosa, South Pines and University elementary schools.

Tickets are $8 and are on sale now through the University High School business office or at the door starting at 6 p.m. on performance nights.

• The drama department at Central Valley High School, 821 S. Sullivan Road, will present the thriller, “Wait Until Dark” Thursday, Friday, Nov. 6, 8 and 9 at 7:30 p.m. in the school theater.

The play is a Hitchcock-style thriller and is not recommended for young children.

The cast includes Ashton Toth as Mike Talman, Dexter Calkins as Sgt. Carlino, David Malinak as Harry Roat Jr., Lani Call as Susy Hendrix, Daniel Graham as Sam Hendrix, Katelyn Graham as Gloria, Ethan Erickson as policeman No. 1 and Brandon Carter as policeman No 2. The crew includes Erickson, Chris Pittella, Tegan Monaghan, Mariah Crosby, Carter, Kendra Sherrill, Jessica Boynton and Hannah Damiano.

Tickets are $8 and are available at the door. The box office will open at 6:45 on performance nights.

Apple Award Construction Achievement Grant

Orchard Center Elementary School in the West Valley School District has been selected as one of five elementary schools in the state to receive the 2010 Apple Award Construction Achievement Grant for $25,000.

The grant is awarded to schools by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction for academic improvement from the 2008-’09 and 2009-’10 school years, school size, geographic location and other criteria.

The funds must be used for a capital construction project at the school and the state legislature states the project must be chosen by the students, led by adult mentors, parents, educators or administrators.

AP Scholar awards

Ninety-three students in the Central Valley School District have been recognized for exceptional achievement on advanced placement exams.

The National AP Scholar Award is presented to students who earn an average grade of 4 or higher on all AP exams and a grade of 4 or higher on eight or more of the exams.

At Central Valley High School, Cameron Allen, Brian Moore, Cameron Nemeth and Janni Sun were given this award.

At University High School, Amy Bestick and David Finkel achieved this award.

The AP Scholar with Distinction award is presented to those students who earn a 3.5 or higher on all AP exams taken and a grade of 3 or higher on five or more of these tests.

The students from CV include Cameron Allen, Zane Allinger, Alexandria Arthun-Roullier, Krisha-Tyra Bautista, Scott Bischoff, Nathaniel Coulson, Hannah Damiano, Mitchell Dumais, Zachary Fitting, Kaitlin Gillespie, Hallie Himmelreich, Philip Keeve, Sarah Malinak, Samantha Martinez, Brian Moore, Cameron Nemeth, Timothy Potts, Ashley Renz, Kaitlin Ronngren, Amanda Savage, Ryan Seacrist, Ashleigh Seely, Janni Sun, Hilary Weisbeck and Rachel White.

The students from U-Hi include Jonathan Bademian, Amy Bestick, David Finkel, Caitlin Hess, Joel Hetrick, Trevin Heibert, Ryan Linehan, Cassandra Partridge and Nathan Pindras.

The AP Scholar with Honor Award goes to students who have earn an average of 3.25 on all AP Exams and a grade of 3 or higher on four or more of these tests.

Central Valley: Natalie Doyle, Daniel Hays, Michael Lucas, Nichole Richardson, Amanda Seely, Ivvie Shellhorn, Kyle Siddoway, Jacob Troxel and Cathy Truong.

University: Emily Dempsey, Bradley Dowling, Rebecca Jhung, Scott Lovinger, Katie Rolli, Kathleen Sherry, Kevin Witkoe and Steven Witkoe.

The AP Scholar Award is given to students who earn a 3 or higher on at least three exams.
