Gay, Mayo lead Grizzlies past Mavericks

NBA: Rudy Gay scored 21 points, O.J. Mayo added 20, and each made key defensive plays in the final seconds to help the Memphis Grizzlies beat the host Dallas Mavericks 91-90 on Friday night.

Marc Gasol added 10 points and 15 rebounds, and Dallas native Darrell Arthur contributed 14 points for Memphis, which split its first two games of the season.

Dirk Nowitzki had 27 points and Caron Butler finished with 18 for the Mavericks, also 1-1 after the first two games.

Nowitzki’s 18-footer gave Dallas a 90-89 lead, but Mike Conley made one of two free throws with 47 seconds remaining to tie it.

Gasol was fouled by Tyson Chandler during a scrap for a rebound with 6.7 left, and he made one of two free throws to give Memphis the lead.

Odom leads Lakers past Suns: Lamar Odom had 18 points and 17 rebounds and the Los Angeles Lakers beat Phoenix 114-106 in the Suns’ home opener.

Kobe Bryant scored 25 points and Pau Gasol had 21 for the Lakers. Grant Hill scored 21 points, Robin Lopez had 18 points and 14 rebounds and Jason Richardson added 17 points for the Suns.

Paul leads Hornets past Nuggets: Chris Paul scored 18 points and the New Orleans Hornets notched a 101-95 victory over the visiting Denver Nuggets.

David West scored 17 points and Emeka Okafor added 13 for the Hornets. Carmelo Anthony scored 24 points and Chauncey Billups added 20 for Denver.

• Harris leads late Nets rally for victory: Devin Harris had 21 points and 10 assists, helping the New Jersey Nets stage another late rally in a 106-100 victory over the Sacramento Kings in Newark, N.J.

New Jersey closed with a 17-3 surge over the final 3:40. Brook Lopez had 29 points and 15 rebounds for the Nets. Tyreke Evans and Francisco Garcia had 18 points apiece for Sacramento.

Pouliot’s goal lifts Canadiens over Isles

NHL: Benoit Pouliot snapped a third-period tie, and Alex Auld made 30 saves in his season debut as the Montreal Canadiens beat the New York Islanders 3-1 at Uniondale, N.Y.

Tomas Plekanec and Travis Moen also scored for the Canadiens, who have won six of seven.

• Giroux, Flyers beat Penguins: Claude Giroux scored short-handed and on a power play and rookie Sergei Bobrovsky made 26 saves to lead the visiting Philadelphia Flyers to a 3-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins. Daniel Carcillo scored the Flyers’ other goal. Kris Letang and Tyler Kenney scored for Pittsburgh.

Byfuglien’s OT goal helps Thrashers top Sabres: Dustin Byfuglien split two defenders and beat Ryan Miller with a wrist shot at 4:31 of overtime to give the Atlanta Thrashers a 4-3 victory over the Buffalo Sabres in Atlanta. Buffalo tied it with 8 seconds left in regulation when Derek Roy beat Atlanta goalie Chris Mason.

• Hurricanes’ Cole scores winner against Rangers: Erik Cole scored the go-ahead goal with 3:59 left in the Carolina Hurricanes’ 4-3 victory over the host New York Rangers. Tuomo Ruutu also scored for Carolina and Cam Ward made 40 saves. Ryan Callahan, Marc Stall and Brandon Dubinsky scored for New York.

Clijsters beaten at WTA Championships

Miscellany: Vera Zvonareva secured the year-end No. 2 ranking by beating the Kim Clijsters 6-4, 7-5 at the WTA Championships in Doha, Qatar.

Zvonareva ensured that she will take on No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki in one semifinal today. Clijsters, who had previously qualified for the semifinals, will face Sam Stosur.

Earlier in the day, Elena Dementieva announced her retirement after bowing out to Francesca Schiavone 6-4, 6-2.

Lemieux stops Camacho Jr. in first round: At Montreal, David Lemieux stopped Hector Camacho Jr. in the final second of the first round to improve to 24-0 and retain the WBC International middleweight boxing title.

The 21-year-old Canadian landed a big right midway through the round that left Camacho (52-4-1) wobbly, then finished him off at the end of the round at Bell Centre.

• Girardi, Yankees finalize deal: The New York Yankees and manager Joe Girardi finalized a contract that runs through the 2013 season.

A person familiar with Girardi’s contract said the deal is worth $9 million. Girardi would be able to earn about $500,000 more each year in bonuses based on the team’s performance.

Armstrong, RadioShack fined over Tour jersey row: Lance Armstrong, his RadioShack teammates and team manager Johan Bruyneel were fined by cycling’s governing body in Aigle, Switzerland, because the riders wore unauthorized jerseys on the final stage of this year’s Tour de France.

The International Cycling Union handed down fines to the team for wearing black jerseys with “28” on the back to support the Texan’s Livestrong Foundation.

Kanaan out at Andretti; Hunter-Reay extended: Former IndyCar champion Tony Kanaan is looking for a new ride.

The 2004 series champion from Brazil has reached a settlement with Andretti Autosport that releases him from his contract immediately. Terms were not disclosed.

The settlement came the same day Andretti announced a two-year extension with Ryan Hunter-Reay through 2012.

Hurst, Kim share lead in LPGA Tour event

Golf: American Vicky Hurst and South Korea’s Song-Hee Kim shot 4-under-par 68s in chilly conditions to share the first-round lead in the LPGA Hana Bank Championship at Incheon, South Korea.

Defending champion Na Yeon Choi and Amy Hung opened with 69s, and Michelle Wie topped a large group at 70.

Wendy Ward (Edwall, Wash.) shot a 2-over 74, leaving her tied for 41st.

Five tied for Champions Tour lead: Hale Irwin shot a 6-under 65 for a share of the first-round lead in the AT&T Championship with John Cook, Larry Nelson, Chien Soon Lu and Mark Wiebe.

Mark Calcavecchia, Russ Cochran, Gene Jones, Chip Beck, Keith Fergus, Dan Forsman, Steve Lowery, Rod Spittle, Javier Sanchez and Kirk Hanefeld opened with 66s at Oak Hills Country Club in San Francisco.

• McDowell leads, Kaymer struggles in Spain: Martin Kaymer is unlikely to take over the No. 1 ranking from Tiger Woods after falling 11 shots behind leader Graeme McDowell at the Andalucia Masters at Sotogrande, Spain.

Kaymer struggled to a 3-over 74, while McDowell shot a 67 and finished at 7-under 135.

If Kaymer finishes outside the top two, Lee Westwood of England will take over from Woods as No. 1.
