Arizona stays in Pac-10 title hunt

Backup Matt Scott had another big game, passing for a career-high 319 yards, and No. 15 Arizona held off UCLA 29-21 on Saturday in Pasadena, Calif., to remain in contention for its first Pac-10 championship.

Scott was 24 of 36 with one interception and one touchdown. The junior also carried 12 times for 71 yards.

He threw for 233 yards and ran for another 65 in a 44-14 victory over Washington last weekend filling in for Nick Foles. Foles sprained his right knee two weeks ago and might be healthy enough to return Saturday when the Wildcats play at No. 13 Stanford.

“I can’t worry about next week’s game. That’s the coach’s decision,” Scott said. “I need to learn from my mistakes.”

“Nick was close today, and we’ll evaluate the situation,” Arizona coach Mike Stoops said. “If Nick is ready, he’ll start against Stanford.”

Keola Antolin rushed for 111 yards on 23 carries for the Wildcats, off to their best start since winning seven of their first eight games en route to a 12-1 finish in 1998.

Richard Brehaut passed for 228 yards and two touchdowns for the Bruins, who lost their third straight game but performed much better than in their last two, when they were outscored 95-20 at California and Oregon.

Arizona rolled up a season-high 583 yards and 32 first downs and held the Bruins to 299 yards and 15 first downs.

Oregon State 35, California 7: Jacquizz Rodgers threw for a touchdown before running for three more and the Beavers romped past the Golden Bears in Corvallis, Ore.

Rodgers rushed for 119 yards for OSU, which led 28-0 at half.

California was stung in the first quarter when quarterback Kevin Riley injured his left knee and had to be helped off the field. The nature of his injury was not immediately released.

Riley did not return and was replaced by Brock Mansion.

“Right now it looks a little bit more serious than your everyday sprained knee,” Cal coach Jeff Tedford said.

Cal has lost six straight games on the road.
