Area roundup: Whitworth shuts out Willamette

Kekoa Mountcastle scored a pair of goals after the 65-minute mark Saturday to lead the Whitworth men’s soccer team (9-5-2, 6-4-2) to a 2-0 shutout of Northwest Conference foe Willamette (3-11-3, 1-9-2) in Spokane.

Kyle Novak recorded the shutout with three saves as the Pirates held the Bearcats to seven shots.

• Edgar Valera broke a 1-1 tie with a goal in the 76th minute as Treasure Valley CC (8-5-4, 7-2-3 NWAACC) came back from a one-goal deficit to beat Community Colleges of Spokane (9-5-4, 6-3-2) 2-1 in Ontario, Ore.

Andrew Mastronardi gave the Sasquatch a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 37th minute.

• North Idaho (9-7-2) beat Whatcom CC 2-0 in nonconference play in Bellingham. No other information was available.

Women’s soccer

Sarah Berentson scored two goals and added an assist on Whitworth’s first goal as the Pirates (12-5-1, 10-3-1) cruised to a 4-1 victory over Willamette (6-9-2, 5-6-2) in Northwest Conference action in Spokane.

The Pirates outshot Willamette 12-3 in the match, led by Berentson, who had four shots on goal.

• Shaylie Barcellos recorded a shutout and Tabitha Grow and Tawny Thompson each scored a goal and added an assist as CC Spokane (10-3-3, 7-3-3 NWAACC) blanked Treasure Valley CC (5-11-2, 4-8-1) in Ontario, Ore.

• Alyssa Howell made five saves on six shots by Whatcom CC and North Idaho (10-4-3) played to a 0-0 tie in Bellingham.

NIC plays Laramie County CC in the semifinal round of the district tournament at 11 a.m. Friday in Cheyenne, Wyo.

Volleyball

Alex Jupiter had 30 kills and Falyn Fonoimoana added 21 as No. 8 USC (19-3, 8-3 Pac-10) upended No. 7 Washington (17-5, 6-5) 3-2 in Los Angeles.

The Huskies forced a fifth set by winning 25-23 in the fourth, but fell 15-13 in the final frame to drop their second consecutive match in Pac-10 play.

• Shelby Puckett tallied 21 kills, and after being tied 7-7 in the fifth set, Eastern Washington (7-15, 6-6) scored four straight points and won 15-10 to beat Montana (10-12, 6-5) 3-2 in Big Sky action in Cheney.

Jacque Brown tallied 13 kills and 24 digs and Chenoa Coviare added 13 kills as the Eagles rallied from a 2-0 deficit to take the final three sets.

• Ka’ipo Rocha tallied 13 kills and Kaimi Rocha added eight kills with 11 digs and Whitworth (15-6, 12-2) earned its fourth consecutive win with a 3-1 victory over Linfield (8-14, 6-8) in Northwest Conference action in Spokane.

The Pirates remain tied atop the NWC standings with Puget Sound with two matches remaining.

• Amy DeGroot and Chloe Ferrari combined for 44 kills and No. 19 San Diego (19-4, 9-0) defeated WCC opponent Gonzaga (2-23, 0-9) 3-1 in Spokane.

The Bulldogs won the opening set 26-24 but dropped the next three en route to their 21st consecutive loss.

• North Idaho (23-6, 9-1) rallied from its first loss of the SWAC season to beat Snow College (17-13, 6-4) in four sets, 25-22, 15-25, 28-26, 25-19 in Ephraim, Utah.

Wrestling

Sophomore Kyle McCrite (125-pound class) dominated Great Falls’ Brian Borst for a 19-4 major decision, one of four such scores for North Idaho in its 25-11 win in Great Falls.

McCrite and Jesse Nielsen (174 pounds) jumped out to 2-0 records on the season after Nielsen added a 10-4 decision against Noah Hatton.
