In brief: Vandals on way to a shellacking from Hawaii

College football: The Idaho Vandals trailed Hawaii 45-3 with 5 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter in their Western Athletic Conference game at Honolulu early this morning (PDT).

The Vandals, who would drop to 4-4 overall, 1-2 WAC with the loss, trailed 31-3 at halftime. Hawaii would improve to 7-2, 5-0.

Idaho had several players banged up during the game including tight end Daniel Hardy who left in the first half with a leg injury.

Blazers don’t offer to Oden

Basketball: The Portland Trail Blazers won’t offer a contract extension to former No. 1 pick Greg Oden before the Monday deadline, a team spokesman said.

The Oregonian reported Friday that the Blazers and Oden’s representatives agreed there would be no extension, making the oft-injured center the first top pick since Kwame Brown not to get one at the end of his rookie contract. Teams have until Monday to reach deals with first-round picks from the 2007 draft.

But Portland hasn’t seen enough of Oden, who has played in only 82 games since he was picked ahead of Kevin Durant. He has been sidelined since fracturing his left patella last Dec. 5.

12 overtimes later, game ends

Prep football: Friday night lights burned well into Saturday morning before Rodrigo Carreon kicked a 19-yard field goal to give Jacksonville an 84-81 victory over Nacogdoches in a Texas high school football game decided in the 12th period of overtime.

The game possibly set a national record. The National High School Record Book lists two games that went nine overtimes. One of those was in 2006 in Washington when Bothell beat Pasco 43-40.
