Man killed in fire with dogs identified

A man found dead with his dogs after a house fire early Sunday in Spokane has been identified as James L. Stowell, 46. Toxicology reports are pending, but fire officials believe Stowell died from smoke inhalation. Investigators are still trying to determine what caused the fire at 1003 E. Ermina Ave., said Assistant Chief Brian Schaeffer. Initial response was delayed when firefighters were dispatched to the wrong address. They arrived at 1:22 a.m. to find the home engulfed in flames; police were already on the scene. The fire at the 700-square-foot home was under control within 15 minutes. Nearly 30 firefighters, three engines, two senior ladders and a heavy rescue rig battled the blaze.
