In brief: AIDS walk signup is under way

RIVERFRONT PARK – Early registration is now available for the Spokane AIDS Walk, Sept. 11 at Riverfront Park.

The walk, themed “Cover Your Head!,” will begin at 10:30 a.m. and includes hat contests for the most original hat and most creative hat, and prizes for individuals and teams raising the most money. Registration is also available the day of the walk and will begin at 9:30 a.m.

All proceeds support the Spokane AIDS Network in its work to serve those living with HIV and AIDS and to prevent the spread of the disease.

To register, visit www.SpokaneAIDS.org. Cost is $20 for adults and $15 for children/youth; each participant will receive a T-shirt and water bottle. Participants can register as individuals, form a team or join an existing team. Individuals and teams will compete against one another in recruiting members and raising funds.

Funds available for public services

SPOKANE – The city of Spokane Community Development Department recently announced that public service funding applications are available for the 2011 fiscal year, from July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2012. Up to $150,000 will be allocated among agencies that provide benefits to people of low and moderate incomes within the city limits.

To be eligible to receive funding, service providers must be a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations or a public agencies.

Applications may be obtained by contacting the city of Spokane Community Development Department at (509) 625-6325, located on the sixth floor of City Hall, 808 W. Spokane Falls Blvd. The application deadline is Sept. 16 at 4 p.m.

Artist demos at Pottery Plus

RIVERSIDE – Area artists will demonstrate their work at Pottery Place Plus, 203 N. Washington St., during “Artists in Action” on Sept. 11 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sept. 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Artists will have works for sale and host studios will have light refreshments. The event is free and open to the public.

Salvation Army drive aids students

SPOKANE COUNTY – With the help of the Spokane community, the Salvation Army’s annual Back to School Supply Drive provided 1,812 local children in need with backpacks filled with school supplies for the upcoming school year.

Students who were not able to receive a backpack during the drive can stop by the Salvation Army Community Services Center, 222 E. Indiana Ave., or call (509) 325-6810.
