Spice up weekends with choice of fun activities

Billie Martin

Here it is Labor Day weekend already. Where did the summer go? Hopefully, the 70s temperatures will last through the holiday – or longer, so we could all get some ripe tomatoes.

The Riverside School District started Tuesday. But hey, kids, the good news is you had three days back at school then a four-day weekend! Free breakfast is available to all students registered in the district. There is also a free or reduced-price lunch program available for all grades. For more information, call the district office at (509) 464-8201 or go to its website.

On Labor Day weekend, there are some good activities going on in Pend Oreille County. Friday night there will be an open mike at the Pend Oreille Playhouse on Union Street in Newport ($2 entry). The Playhouse Gallery display through Oct. 4 is “Water Ways.”

There is a celebration in Metaline Falls called Affair on Main Street. There will be breakfast on the UCC Church grounds on Saturday morning at 7. The arts, crafts and food vendors are open Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be music, can-can dancers, and the Pend Oreille Valley Lions excursion train will be running at 11 a.m., 1 and 3 p.m. between Metaline Falls and Ione. For reservations, call (877) 525-5226 or visit www.lionstrainrides.com.

If you are in Newport, pick up a fish frenzy map at the Create Arts Center. The large plywood fish have been made into works of art which are displayed at many area businesses, and you can vote for your favorite.

One of the fish on display was created by the Elk Music Association, which is sponsoring the Mountain Folk Festival on Patriots Day, Sept. 11, at the pavilion on the Elk VFW grounds beginning at noon and lasting as long as folks want to play, sing and enjoy. There will be a kids’ activity tent and Elk Pioneer Days merchandise for sale. Bring your chairs and picnic meals and join in the open jams or just sit back and enjoy this free event. Visit the website for more information about the folk festival and other area entertainment.

On Sept. 12, Elk SCOPE members will be cooking and serving breakfast at its pancake feed fundraiser at the Grub & More Restaurant just south of Elk to Highway Road from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. (or until the food runs out.)

The Elk VFW Post members serve breakfast (open to the public) every Sunday from 8 to 11 a.m.

Just a reminder, coming up on Sept. 18 will be the annual Eloika Lake Poker Paddle (www.eloikalake.com). On Sept. 25, the Inland Grange will hold its fourth annual Trail Ride and Barbecue. Call (509) 220-3069 for more information.
