Boise sweeps GU

Fiona Jones led host Boise State with 12 kills and Saddie Maughan added 11 as the Broncos’ volleyball team (3-1) swept Gonzaga 3-0 on the opening night of the Northwest Challenge on Friday in Boise.

Caitlin Cozad paced the Bulldogs (2-3) with 11 kills, but the Zags committed 19 attack errors and were outblocked 12-4 by BSU.

The Bulldogs will face Portland State and No. 9 Washington today in the second day of the tournament.

The Huskies swept PSU on Friday, holding the Vikings to a negative hitting percentage. Becky Perry led the way for Washington with 18 kills and four blocks.

• Tulsa (2-2) took a commanding lead in the opening game against Washington State (2-2), paving the way for a 25-12, 25-16, 25-15 sweep of the Cougars in the opening match of the Powerade Asics Challenge tournament at War Memorial Gym in San Francisco.

WSU will continue tournament play today with a match against UC Santa Barbara at 9:30 a.m. and against San Francisco at 7 p.m.

• Paola Ampudia had 16 kills and Brittney Brimmage added 10 as Missouri marched its way to a 4-0 start by sweeping Eastern Washington (1-3) 25-16, 25-22, 25-17 at the Pepperdine Asics Challenge in Malibu, Calif.

• Svenja Engelhardt led the way with 18 kills as Pacific (3-1) handed Idaho (2-3) its second straight defeat at the Community Bankers Classic 25-20, 25-19, 25-20 in Stockton, Calif.

• Playing two matches during the first day of the Trinity University River City Classic, Whitworth (2-2) swept McMurray 26-24, 25-19, 25-18 before falling 3-0 to UMass in San Antonio.

Against McMurray, Kaimi Rocha led the way for the Pirates with 11 kills and 20 digs.

• Tina Strahinic tallied 27 kills and Kaylee Ponce added 14 as North Idaho edged Northwest with a 15-12 victory in the fifth game at the Salt Lake Invitational in Salt Lake City. The Cardinals (4-3) could not keep the momentum rolling, losing 25-22, 25-22, 19-25, 28-26 to Eastern Arizona.

• Community Colleges of Spokane (4-0) opened the Highline Fall Classic beating Whatcom 25-20, 19-25, 16-14 and South Western Oregon 25-20, 25-16 in Des Moines, Wash.

Women’s soccer

After playing Washington State even through the first 75 minutes, No. 12 BYU (5-0) received goals from Jessica Ringwood and Jennie Marshall to knock off the Cougars (1-4) 3-1 in Provo, Utah.

• Lexi Kopf scored two of UC Irvine’s four goals in the second half as the Anteaters (2-1-1) rolled over Gonzaga (2-2-1) 6-2 in nonconference action in Spokane.

Ashley Riley and Katie Spangenberg each scored for the Bulldogs, but they could not stop UC Irvine, which scored six goals on 16 shots.

• Chelsea Small netted the winner in the 23rd minute as Idaho (2-2) opened its bid to repeat as winner of the Governor’s Cup with a 2-1 victory over Idaho State (2-2-1) in Pocatello.

• Alexandra Watkins broke a scoreless tie in the 109th minute to lift Dubuque (2-0) to a 1-0 victory over Whitworth (0-2) in the Bob Baptista tournament at Wheaton, Ill..

• Ava Ames scored in the 109th minute of double overtime to push Seattle (3-2) to a 2-1 win at Eastern Washington (0-2-1). Whitney Brannan kept the Eagles alive with a late goal in the 71st minute.

Men’s soccer

Alexandru Morari scored in the fourth minute and Josh Long recorded the shutout in net for Bellevue (1-0), which beat Community Colleges of Spokane (0-2) 1-0 in nonconference play at Bellevue, Wash.

Hockey

Connor Rankin’s goal with 7:45 remaining in the third period gave Tri-City a 3-2 edge over the Spokane Chiefs in their tournament opener at the Silvertips Preseason Classic in Everett.

The Americans’ Matt Hughesman scored two first-period goals. Spokane tied it on Anthony Bardaro’s goal 4:44 into the third period. Bruin McDonald had a goal and an assist for Spokane.

Mac Engel and Chris Sharkey split goal-tending duties for the Chiefs.

Cross country

Washington State junior Jono Lafler won the individual men’s title, but it was Washington that took the men’s and women’s team titles in the dual meet at Ephrata High School.

Despite Lafler taking first in the 6,000-meter race in a time of 18 minutes, 22.64 seconds, Huskies runners finished in second, third and fourth places to secure the team victory with 25 points.

The Washington women, ranked No. 2 in the USTFCCCA preseason poll, beat the Cougars 24-33.

Kailey Campbell led the Huskies in 14:00.63 for 4,000 meters, more than 11 seconds better than WSU’s Ruby Roberts, who finished in 14:11.97.
