In brief: Chiefs rally again at preseason classic

For the second day in a row the Spokane Chiefs rallied from a two-goal deficit to earn a win in extra time, defeating the Portland Winterhawks 3-2 in a shootout Sunday at the Everett Silvertips Preseason Classic.

Spokane was a perfect three-for-three in shootout attempts to finish the weekend tournament with a 2-1 record.

Portland took a 2-0 lead in the first period and it was not until the third period that the Chiefs would answer.

Levko Koper scored the Chiefs’ first goal at 10:15 of the third and Anthony Bardaro matched it seven minutes later to tie the score.

Bardaro, Blake Gal and Mitch Holmberg all scored for the Chiefs in the shootout while James Reid stopped one of two Portland shots.

Women’s soccer

Freshman Micaela Castain scored three goals to lead Washington State past Weber State 4-1 in a non-conference match at Ogden, Utah.

After Washington State (2-4-0) went down 1-0 in the first half, Castain’s tallied a pair of goals to put the Cougars on top 2-1 at halftime. She added a goal in 70th minute to complete the hat trick.

• Idaho wrapped up Governor’s Cup play spotless for the second year in a row with a 3-0 win over Utah Valley.

Sophomore Chelsea Small notched a pair of scores, including the game-winner for the second match in a row, while freshman Kelsey Corney earned her first career goal and assist. Junior goalkeeper Liz Boyden (Ferris) made four saves to earn her sixth career shutout. Small and sophomore defender Cassandra San were named to the all-tournament team.

• Gonzaga was defeated by Seattle University 2-0 at Championship Field in Seattle, the second loss of the weekend for the Zags (2-3-1).

Kara Kuttler and Ashley Fritts scored for Seattle (4-2-0).

• Eastern Washington allowed two goals in the second half, resulting in a 3-1 setback to UC-Irvine in Cheney.

Freshman Erin Bourguignon scored her first career goal for the Eagles (0-3-1).

• North Idaho College and Treasure Valley Community College played a 0-0 tie at the Cardinal Classic in Coeur d’Alene.

Hayley Smith and Charlie Evans just missed prime scoring opportunities for the Cardinals. Lauren Gibson made one save in the shutout.

Men’s soccer

Whitworth scored a pair of goals in the final five minutes of the first half to win its season opener, defeating Augsburg College 2-0 in a non-conference match at the Whitworth Soccer Field.

Whitworth outshot the Augies 9-1 in the first half, yet did not find the net until Nic Shaw scored in the 41st minute. After Augsburg could not clear the ball following a corner kick, Devin Merrill passed to a wide open Shaw in the middle of the box.

The Pirates added a goal in the final 10 seconds of the period. Cameron Bushey found Justin Mikkola as time was ticking away.

• Diego Esquivias and Nick Shiner scored in the first half for North Idaho College and the Cardinals defeated Treasure Valley Community College in the Cardinal Classic at Coeur d’Alene.

The Cardinals held the Chukars to three shots and Alex Watson made two saves for NIC.
