Pair missing from Hayden Lake church camp

Mon., Sept. 6, 2010, 6:38 p.m.

The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a report of two persons missing after leaving Camp Mivoden on Hayden Lake.

Virginia L. Acker, 64, of Pasco, Wash., and Gary E. Otterness, 40, of Onalaska, Wash., were at the camp for a church retreat. The two left Saturday around 5:30 p.m. on a 1985 Honda CB650S motorcycle with blue gas tank cover belonging to Otterness.

Investigators believe they intended to return to Camp Mivoden, 17415 E. Hayden Lake Rd. But as of this morning, as the rest of the group prepared to leave, Acker and Otterness still had not returned.

Based on a trace of a cell phone, deputies have been searching area roadways for a possible motorcycle accident involving the couple. Deputies, county search and rescue and Spokane County’s Air 1 helicopter continue to search nearby roads and embankments.

Acker is 5-foot-6 and about 135 pounds with white hair. She last was seen wearing tan Capri pants and a blue tank top. Otterness is 6-foot-1 and about 178 pounds with brown hair. He last was seen wearing dark jeans, as button-up shirt and black boots.

The sheriff’s department is asking that anyone with information on call (208) 446-1300.
