In briefs: Vandals turn to Means to coach men’s golf team

John Means, whose career has been established by his ability to build championship-caliber teams, has accepted the men’s golf coaching position at the University of Idaho.

Means’ coaching career began at the U.S. Military Academy where his teams won 11 conference titles in 11 years. He further proved himself at the University of Minnesota, where, in just three seasons, he led the Golden Gophers to the NCAA championship tournament. That started a run of eight successive NCAA appearances by the Golden Gophers and eight successive seasons ranked in the Top 20.

Means left college golf in 2002 to start his own teaching center. The past five years he has also served as the women’s head coach at Wisconsin-Eau Claire where his final team finished third at the Division III championships.

A pair of Whitworth Pirates garnered the athlete of the week awards.

Trevor Berrian won the men’s award after leading a 1-2-3-4 finish for the Pirates at the Whitman Invitational.

Tonya Turner won the women’s award – leading a 1-2-3-4 in the Whitman Invitational. She won the race for the second straight year.

Soccer

Lateashea Curie assisted on the tying goal and scored the game-winner as the Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch rallied for a 2-1 victory over Clackamas in a preseason women’s soccer tournament match at Spokane Falls CC.

The Sasquatch trailed 1-0 at the half, but Jessie Cook – with an assist from Curie – knotted the score 2:42 into the second half. Curie netted the winner at 48:50.

• Andrew Mastronardi scored three first-half goals and added an assist to lead the CC Spokane Sasquatch to a 5-0 victory over Pierce CC in a preseason men’s tournament at SFCC.

Mastronardi had his hat trick by the 39th minute. Josue Hernandez scored the other two goals for CCS.

In the other match, Tacoma edged Everett, 2-1.

The CC Spokane Sasquatch have been raising money to help support Richelle Heacock of Clackamas, who was severely injured in a car crash. They will present Clackamas with a check when the two teams play on Thursday at SFCC.
