Whole Grain Heroes

According to a recent article from the August edition of Food Management magazine, students in Spokane Public Schools participated in a districtwide “Whole-Grain Hero” initiative and proved they had what it takes to get “their whole grains on.”

The article stated that the district’s goal was to promote whole grain consumption by students and staff, educate about the health benefits and raise awareness of the whole grains offered in the school meal program.

Participants in the promotion completed Whole Grain Hero contracts and then recorded one or more whole grain items consumed each day of the contest week, either at home or at school. The class at each elementary school with the highest percentage of Whole Grain Heroes received T-shirts proclaiming them heroes. At the middle schools and high schools, the Whole Grain Heroes were selected by a random drawing of those who completed their contracts.
