In brief: Hunters with disabilities getting off-road privileges

SANDPOINT – Forest Service officials in the Sandpoint Ranger District announced they will allow qualifying disabled hunters to hunt behind gates at Jeru Lindsey Road 2748, in the Pack River Drainage; Johnson Creek Spur Road 278F, in the Clark Fork area; and Grouse Mountain Sagle Road 1051, in the Sagle area.

The program allows hunters with disabilities to use a motorized vehicle on the designated roads, which are usually closed to motorized use year-round. Sandpoint District Ranger Dick Kramer said the program is available to hunters who hold both a Disabled Hunting License and an Idaho Handicapped Vehicle Hunting Permit.

Qualifying hunters interested in participating in the program for time slots for elk and deer seasons need to apply at the Sandpoint Ranger District Office, 1602 Ontario St. in Sandpoint, by noon on Oct. 1. Applications are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Hunters will need to provide a copy of their disabled Hunting License and Handicapped Vehicle Hunting permit, make, model and year of the vehicle to be used, and the name of the hunting assistant.

For more information about the program, call the Sandpoint Ranger District at (208) 263-5111. The Sandpoint Ranger District office is open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
