Peace plan for Israel

If Israel were truly interested in peace, as Mr. Barenti asserts (Letters, Sept. 5), they would comply with international law, Geneva Conventions and over 70 U.N. resolutions.

Israel could do the following:

Allow Palestinians, driven from their homes, the right to either return to their homes or receive restitution for their property loss – a right granted by the fourth Geneva Convention.

Cease their apartheid practices in the West Bank: building illegal Jewish-only settlements; constructing special highways for Israelis only; distributing 85 percent of the water resources to the minority Jewish settler population, 15 percent to the majority Palestinian population; building a Separation Wall, large portions of which have been built on confiscated Palestinian land; demolishing Palestinian homes for use by Jews only; establishing hundreds of check points which hamper free travel by Palestinians.

Cease discrimination against non-Jewish citizens of Israel in housing, employment and education.

End the blockade of Gaza, whose 1.4 million residents are imprisoned in the largest open-air prison in the world.

Cease aggressive military acts such as Operation Cast Lead in 2008-’09, which killed 1,400 Gazans (over 400 of them children) and targeted schools, hospitals, sewer and water systems.

Wake up, Spokane. Do you know you are being taken for a ride? Have you looked at your latest utility bill? Mine went from around $99 a month to $150 because we are now going by a system called distribution system leakage (DSL).

They are now measuring the water you use by gallons? I guess that means I need to get out my measuring cups/teaspoons. They don’t have a clue. People are trying to do what they can to save water, me included. This is just insane. I guess I’ll forgo the usual two-minute bath time and start using the rain barrel like they used to.

We need to put a stop to all this insanity. I understand the city is in big trouble, but there has to be another way. Maybe take a pay cut?
