Shadle Park teacher named Einstein Fellow

Shadle Park High School physics and science teacher Matthew Inman was recently recognized for his excellence in teaching by the Triangle Coalition for Science and Technology Education as a 2010-’11 Einstein Fellow. Inman is one of 32 teachers selected by the group to be a part of the Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellowship Program.

The program offers exceptional elementary and secondary science, technology, engineering and math teachers an opportunity to serve in the national education or public policy arenas.

According to a press release from the Triangle Coalition, Inman is a National Board Certified Teacher in secondary science/physics. He also coaches Shadle’s Science Olympiad and Science Bowl teams. “A good teacher understands that rigor is not about how much work you assign but about the level of thought and engagement the work requires,” Inman said.

He has a bachelor of science in physics from the University of Washington, a master of science in physics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a bachelor of arts in education from Eastern Washington University.

Cross-country returns for elementary kids

Spokane Public Schools has announced that elementary students in will once again have the opportunity to participate in a cross-country program.

The program is supported by Active4Youth, a nonprofit group whose goal is to provide after-school sports programs for local Spokane children to combat childhood obesity.

The season will begin Oct. 18. Runners will have hourlong practices three times a week. Regional and qualifying meets will be on Sept. 27, Sept. 29, Oct. 4 and Oct. 6. The All-City Meet will be Oct. 18 at 4:30 p.m. at Comstock Park.
