Snow closes Glacier Park Road

Going-to-the-Sun Road may reopen, but soon closes for season

Proof that the seasons are changing came from Glacier National Park today, where officials temporarily closed the upper portion of the Going-to-the-Sun Road because of potential snow-slide danger from recent storms. The popular park road over Logan Pass was blocked for through-traffic between Big Bend on the west side and Jackson Glacier Overlook on the east side. The highway section likely will be re-opened this weekend as soon as avalanche danger subsides, officials said. However, this is the last scheduled weekend of 2010 to drive the entire length of the Sun Road. Starting Monday, west side fall motor vehicle access will be restricted at Avalanche. Logan Pass will remain accessible for motor vehicle traffic from the east side, weather permitting, until the pass is closed for the season to all vehicle traffic Oct. 18. Beginning Sept. 20, no vehicles will be allowed to access the Loop or Packer’s Roost trailheads popular with backpackers. Many campgrounds in Glacier are being winterized. While some will remain open, no running water will be available. Updates: (406) 888-7800.www.nps.gov/glac
