An 18-year-old Fairfield, Wash., man died early Saturday when his car left the Palouse Highway and struck a tree.

The teen was pronounced dead at the scene.

His passenger, an 18-year-old woman from Waverly, Wash., was rushed by helicopter to a Spokane hospital, where she remained in the intensive care unit late Saturday, Spokane County sheriff’s Lt. Laurie Miller said.

The man was driving a 1999 Subaru when the car left the highway near Dunn Road and hit a tree, causing major front-end damage, Miller said.

Emergency crews learned of the crash at 1:04 a.m.
