Arrested A former referee involved in Italy’s controversial elimination from the 2002 World Cup was caught at Kennedy Airport in New York with bags of heroin attached to his body, federal prosecutors said Tuesday. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested Byron Moreno late Monday after he arrived in New York on a commercial flight from his native Ecuador.

Pleaded A Virginia chiropractor who treated members of the Washington Capitals hockey team pleaded guilty to misdemeanor steroids charges in Florida. Douglas Nagel, 50, was placed on three years of probation and ordered to perform 200 hours of community service, said Chip Thullbery, spokesman for the Polk County, Fla. State Attorney.

Signed Defenseman Tom Poti signed a two-year, $5.75 million contract extension with the Washington Capitals. Poti will receive $3 million in the 2011-12 season, and $2.75 million in 2012-13.

Recovering Oklahoma City center Nenad Krstic is recovering after having surgery to repair a broken finger on his right hand. Krstic was injured in the final game of this year’s world basketball championship in Istanbul.

Reported The Tennessee basketball program reported several NCAA violations committed under coach Bruce Pearl, including nearly 100 excessive phone calls to recruits and permitting families of recruits to stay longer than allowed by the NCAA when visiting Knoxville.

Reduced A judge has reduced the amount of money the University of Minnesota must pay to former Oklahoma State basketball coach Jimmy Williams, who sued the school and coach Tubby Smith after they decided not to hire him back in 2007. The award was reduced from $1.25 million to the $1 million limit of the university’s insurance policy.
