In brief: Vick will start, Reid says

Football: Michael Vick (pictured) will take over as the Philadelphia Eagles’ starting quarterback, coach Andy Reid said Tuesday, a day after he announced he would go back to Kevin Kolb.

“When someone is playing at the level Michael Vick is playing, you have to give him an opportunity,” Reid said Tuesday.

Kolb missed the last six quarters because of a concussion, and Vick played well in his absence.

Kolb was cleared to practice and was expected to run the first-team offense on Wednesday.

“Kevin is fine. It’s not an injury-related issue,” Reid said. “It’s not about judging him.”

Vick threw for 175 yards and one touchdown and ran for 103 yards in a 27-20 season-opening loss to Green Bay. He had 284 yards passing and two TDs in a 35-32 win at Detroit on Sunday.

Kolb started two games in his first three seasons before he became the team’s No. 1 quarterback after Donovan McNabb was traded to Washington.

Vick’s start against the Lions was his first in nearly four years. A three-time Pro Bowl pick during six seasons in Atlanta, Vick missed two seasons while serving an 18-month sentence in federal prison for his role in a dogfighting operation.

Morrison invited to Wizards camp

Basketball: Former Gonzaga University star Adam Morrison of Mead has accepted a training camp invitation with the Washington Wizards, according to Washington Post blogger Michael Lee, who quotes two league sources.

Morrison, who spent the last two seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers, worked out for several teams in Las Vegas, including the Wizards, and had an individual workout with Wizards coach Flip Saunders.

“I haven’t played basically in two years, so I’m just looking for a place to get some quality minutes and try to get back in that rhythm again,” Morrison said in Las Vegas.

Morrison worked out for the Boston Celtics last week, but selected the Wizards because he hopes to find that rhythm in Saunders’ offense, according to a league source quoted by Lee. The same source said Morrison worked out at Verizon Center on Tuesday.

The Wizards have just 12 players under contract and president Ernie Grunfeld has mentioned that two or three roster spots could be available in training camp.

Training camp begins on Tuesday.
