Area roundup: Cougs edge Huskies in golf

Sophomore Emma Betland birdied the final hole Wednesday to give the Washington State University women’s golf team its first tournament win in two years.

Betland finished tied for fourth place at 9-over-par 225 over three rounds at Palouse Ridge Golf Club as her Cougars (917) held off Washington by one stroke to claim the Cougar Cup. WSU’s last win was at the Sept. 15-16 Inland Invitational.

Idaho’s Kayla Mortellaro and UW’s Karinn Dickinson tied for first place at 4-over 220. Gonzaga’s Victoria Fallgren placed third, two shots back.

Volleyball

Kaimi Rocha and Amanda Grumbach combined for 20 kills to lead Whitworth (5-5, 2-1 Northwest Conference) to a 3-0 win over host Whitman (3-8, 0-3) at Walla Walla.

• Karis Gamache had 10 kills and three blocks to lead Community Colleges of Spokane (16-4, 2-1 NWAACC) to a 3-0 win at Yakima Valley (9-5, 1-2).

Men’s soccer

Matt Van Houten’s goal in the 84th minute capped Washington’s 2-0 nonconference win over Gonzaga (2-4) at Seattle. Brent Richards scored late in the first half for the Huskies (4-1-1).

Cross country

Eastern Washington senior Amy Kolin was named Big Sky Conference athlete of the week after placing 12th at last Saturday’s Sundodger Invitational in Seattle.
