Region in brief: Taste of the Valley Saturday during Valleyfest

SPOKANE VALLEY – On Saturday, visitors to Valleyfest can enjoy an evening of wine, food and live entertainment at Taste of the Valley, from 6 to 8 p.m. at CenterPlace in Mirabeau Point Park.

Wines from Spokane, Yakima, Prosser and Walla Walla will be featured and food will be provided by Red Rock Catering.

Tickets are $30 per person. No one under 21 years of age will be admitted.

Theater Arts for Children to present ‘Sleepy Hollow’

SPOKANE VALLEY – Theater Arts For Children, 10814 E. Broadway Ave., will perform “Sleepy Hollow,” beginning Oct. 1 at 7 p.m.

The spooky tale of Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman will continue on Oct. 2, Oct. 7-9 and Oct. 14-16. All shows are at 7 p.m.

Tickets are $10 for ages 13 and over and $5 for ages 12 and younger. Tickets may be purchased at the door.

Kiwanis Clubs to host leadership conference

CHEWELAH – The Kiwanis Clubs of Spokane County will host a Key Leader conference Oct. 9 through Oct. 11 in Chewelah, Wash.

During the conference, Kiwanis and Key Club members will teach leadership skills through serving others, giving participants the opportunity to learn to be leaders and grow within themselves. Those interested in the conference must be between the ages of 14 and 18.

Cost for the camp is $175. Camp registration is from 4 to 6 p.m. on Oct. 9, and the conference ends at 11:30 a.m. on Oct. 11.

Full scholarships will be awarded, valued at $175. To apply for a scholarship, applicants must e-mail Dean Crandell at d_crandell6@msn.com, providing their age, school, and a brief statement why they would like to receive the scholarship and attend leadership training. Applicants must have an e-mail address.

LifePrint child safety event Saturday at dental office

NEVADA/LIDGERWOOD – Slack and Combs Orthodontics, 605 E. Holland Ave., will have a DNA LifePrint Child Safety event, on Saturday, from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The national child identification program, including biometric fingerprinting and DNA identification kit, will give parents the opportunity to have their children’s fingerprints submitted to the FBI database, if they were to be reported missing. With the program, the child’s fingerprints would immediately be available to all law enforcement agencies throughout the United States.

All items for the child safety program are free.

Children can participate in face painting and games. Raffles will also be included in the day-long program.

Just Between Friends used clothing sale starts Friday

SPOKANE VALLEY – The “Just Between Friends” fall/winter 2010 sale will be Friday through Sunday at Spokane County Fair and Expo Center, 404 N. Havana St., in bays three and four.

Sale hours will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday; 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday; and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. Items will be half price on Sunday.

Items for sale include fall and winter clothing for infants and juniors; winter coats and boots; shoes; Halloween costumes; nursery items; maternity clothes; baby equipment; books; DVDs; games; children’s furniture and toys.

Tickets are $4 per person Friday and Saturday. Sunday admission is free. Children age 12 and younger are admitted free all weekend.
