Rathdrum man dies from stab wound

A Rathdrum man died Friday night from a stab wound sustained in a fight with his girlfriend’s father.

Brandon S. DeLuca, 22, died after a verbal argument at a Rathdrum mobile home park turned violent.

Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office investigators were called to Prairie Schooner Estates, 2215 W. Highway 53, No. 9, shortly before 8 p.m. Friday. The incident began as a verbal argument between DeLuca and his 23-year-old girlfriend. When the girl’s father, Scott A. Johnson, intervened, a fight between the men erupted, police said.

Johnson, 47, of Rathdrum, fled to a nearby trailer, but told deputies he had stabbed the victim. He was later taken to the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office for questioning. He was released, as evidence indicated Johnson acted in self defense, police said.

Initial reports indicate that DeLuca lunged at Johnson and was stabbed in the upper torso, police said in a news release.
