Cougars sweep meet

Justin Englund took first place in 25 minutes, 14.11 seconds, leading five Washington State cross country runners to finishes in the top 10 Saturday as the Cougars won the 8,000-meter men’s race of the Erik Anderson Cross Country Invitational at Plantes Ferry Park in Spokane Valley.

WSU finished with 19 points to outdistance second-place Lewis-Clark State by 55 points. Gonzaga took third with 98 points.

In the 5,000-meter women’s race, Ruby Roberts earned the top spot in 18:26.71, leading the Cougars to a victory with 30 points. Gonzaga took second with 61 points and Whitworth scored 84.

Men’s soccer

Travis Gutierrez scored his first goal of the season in the 48th minute for Whitworth and after two overtime periods, neither the Pirates (4-2-1, 1-1-1) or Puget Sound (5-1-3, 2-0-1) could break the deadlock, ending the Northwest Conference bout in a 1-1 tie in Spokane.

• After trailing 1-0 at halftime, Community Colleges of Spokane (6-3) received goals from Josue Hernandez and Andrew Mastronardi in the second half to push past Skagit Valley CC (4-4-2) 2-1 in nonconference play at Spokane Falls CC.

• Andrew Owenson and Zach Smith each scored in the first half and Gonzaga (3-4) held off Oregon State (5-2) 3-2 in nonconference play in Corvallis, Ore.

Women’s soccer

Sarah Berentson scored two goals and added an assist and Whitworth (5-3, 3-1) allowed just seven shots with five saves from Callie Bergstrom, shutting out No. 12 Puget Sound (5-1-1, 2-1) 4-0 in Northwest Conference play in Spokane.

• Lateashea Curie tallied a hat trick for Community Colleges of Spokane, scoring one goal in the first half and two more in the second as CCS (6-0-1) stomped visiting Skagit Valley CC (0-8-1) 6-0 in nonconference action at SFCC.

Volleyball

Jill Sawatzky had 16 kills and three blocks and Oregon State (8-8, 1-1) earned its first Pac-10 victory with a 3-1 win against Washington State (6-6, 0-2) in Corvallis, Ore.

• Shelby Puckett had 16 kills and nine digs and Eastern Washington (3-10, 2-2) won its second match in a row after dropping 10 straight, beating Big Sky foe Weber State (2-13, 0-4) 25-15, 17-25, 18-25, 25-23, 15-6 in Cheney.

• Taylor Japhet had 19 kills and San Jose State (6-9, 1-1) outlasted Idaho (6-7, 1-1) 3-2, winning the fifth game 15-8 in WAC play in San Jose, Calif. Allison Walker had 16 kills to lead the Vandals, who led 2-1 in games.

• Amanda Grumbach led all players with 15 kills and added two blocks as Whitworth (6-5, 3-1) swept George Fox (6-8, 1-3) 3-0 in Northwest Conference action in Spokane.

• Tina Strahinic had 16 kills and No. 17 North Idaho (14-5, 1-0) upset No. 7 College of Southern Idaho (15-5, 0-1) 3-1 in their Scenic West Athletic Conference opener on the road in Twin Falls.
