Jackson’s Kingma commits to Oregon

Two things weighed on Brett Kingma as he narrowed his list of college choices. Jackson’s (Mill Creek, Wash.) slick-shooting guard wanted to select a school far enough from home that he would be forced to mature quickly.

But he wanted to remain close enough that he could visit home often.

On Thursday, coaches from Oregon and Brigham Young made in-house visits. The Ducks came in after school and the Cougars visited later that night.

Kingma, a 6-foot-1 shooter, knew both schools would be a good match for him, but in the end he picked the Pac-10, giving an oral commitment to Oregon on Friday.

“With BYU and Oregon coming in Thursday, those were my two favorites,” Kingma said. “I just felt like, at this point in my life, after waking up yesterday and thinking about it all day that Oregon is the best fit for me to grow up and play basketball.”

Earlier this week, Kingma announced a top three that also included Arizona State. It was a bit of a surprise the senior had ruled out Washington, considering his sister, Kristi, plays for UW.
