Area roundup: Idaho blanks CSUB in soccer

Mel Canite and Erica Hart scored and Idaho posted a shutout for the third time in four games with a 2-0 women’s soccer victory over Cal State Bakersfield on Sunday at the Redhawk Invitational in Seattle.

Liz Boyden made three saves for her ninth career shutout as the Vandals improved to 8-3, the best start in school history.

• Cassie Geerdts scored the only goal of the match in the 22nd minute to give Gonzaga a 1-0 win over Portland State in Spokane. Lauren Ames made three saves for the Bulldogs (4-6-1).

• After falling behind in the 12th minute, Whitworth scored four unanswered goals to beat Pacific Lutheran 4-1 in Northwest Conference play in Spokane, the Pirates’ fourth win in a row.

Jami Hegg, Sidonia Davin, Molly Moore and DeeDee Garbe scored for Whitworth (6-3, 4-1), which held PLU to a single shot in the second half.

• Whitney Brannan scored in the second minute for Eastern, but No. 22 Southern California responded with five unanswered goals for a 5-1 victory in Cheney.

Brannan’s goal was her seventh of the season and 13th for her career, making her the third-leading all-time scorer for the Eagles (0-8-1). Brittany Sparks assisted on the goal, giving her six for her career, also third all-time for EWU.

• Demi Wignot scored goals in both halves as North Idaho College beat the University of Idaho club team 6-0 in Coeur d’Alene. The Cardinals improved to 6-2-1.

Men’s soccer

Nic Shaw’s goal off of Cameron Bushey’s corner kick in the 62nd minute ended up being the match-winner as Whitworth beat Pacific Lutheran 4-3 in Northwest Conference action in Spokane.

Kekoa Mountcastle, Dion Coxe and Devin Merrill also scored for the Pirates (5-2-1, 2-1-1), and Bushey and Justin Meyer both had two assists.

• Diego Esquivas, Nick Shiner and Jamil Lawyer scored to give North Idaho College (5-6) a 3-1 win over the University of Idaho club team in Coeur d’Alene.

Junior hockey

Mitch Fowler scored twice and A.J. King added a tally, but Castlegar scored the only goal in the final period to beat the Spokane Braves 4-3 in Kootenay International Junior Hockey League play at Eagles Ice-A-Rena. The Braves dropped to 3-4.

Cross country

Shadle Park’s boys dominated the Division 2 race at the Nike Pre-Nationals at Portland Meadows in Portland on Saturday. The Highlanders scored 79 points to win their division, with three runners in the top 13 and all five competitors recording personal bests over 5,000 meters.
