Area roundup: EWU women land guard

Kylie Huerta, the latest in an impressive string of point guards at Kentwood, has committed to play women’s basketball at Eastern Washington next season.

Huerta, who followed Courtney Vandersloot (Gonzaga) and Lindsey Moore (Nebraska), averaged 19.5 points and five assists and led her league in assists as Kentwood made it to the state tournament. Kentwood won the state title her sophomore year.

“They’ve been recruiting me forever,” Huerta said of the defending Big Sky Conferencer regular-season champions. “It’s close to home. I have a big family and I wanted to stay close to them.”

She played with the Spokane Stars this summer.

Volleyball

Chenoa Coviare of Eastern Washington is the Big Sky Conference player of the week.

In two home matches, the senior middle blocker hit a combined .447. She had a team-high 31.5 total points as the Eagles beat Idaho State 3-1 on Friday and Weber State 3-2 on Saturday to even their Big Sky record at 2-2.

Women’s soccer

Gonzaga senior midfielder Catherine Cullen is the West Coast Conference player of the week.

The Sidney, British Columbia, native scored her first goal of the season off a corner kick in GU’s 2-1 overtime loss to 22nd-ranked Southern Cal on Friday. Two days later, her second assist of the season set up freshman forward Cassie Geerdts’ first collegiate goal that beat Portland State 1-0.

Women’s golf

Kelsey Berg claimed medalist honors to lead Community Colleges of Spokane to a 60-stroke win in the Olympic College Invite league tournament.

Berg shot a 155 for a two-stroke margin and teammate Alexa Bell tied for third at 166 for the Sasquatch, who increased an 18-point lead after Sunday’s first round by 42 strokes Monday.

Men’s golf

With four players within five strokes of one another, Community Colleges of Spokane pulled out a one-stroke victory in the Olympic College Invitational league match.

Alex Pounds (Coeur d’Alene High) tied for third, two strokes back of a pair of golfers who shot 108s in the 27-hole event, leading the Sasquatch to a 448-449 win over Bellevue. CCS’ Grahm Schmaltz shot 113, Andrew Roller (CdA) 114 and Dylan Maine (Freeman) 115.
