Fresh Sheet: Sticky Fingers honored by Cooking Light

After more than 23 years, Sticky Fingers Bakeries is still walking off with awards.

The Spokane-based company, probably known best for its scone mixes, is featured in the October edition of Cooking Light magazine. Editors gave Sticky Fingers’ Orange Curd a nod in its 2010 Taste Awards in the Best in Condiments category.

“Less sour than old-fashioned lemon curd, with an incredibly fresh, bright orange-peel flavor. Simply slather on a biscuit or toast or elevate to sublime heights by spreading on, say, a creamy goat cheese tart,” they wrote.

Ted Vogelman, who owns the company with business partner Tom Owens, says they were tickled by the recognition. They started the company with scone mixes, adding the jams and curds to their catalog about a dozen years ago. They’ve recently been making fruit butters and pepper jelly.

The company’s corporate offices are in Spokane. Mixes, jams, curds and jellies are made by contractors using the Sticky Fingers Bakeries’ recipes and products are shipped across the country from warehouses in Los Angeles and Boise.

Sticky Fingers’ products can be found locally at Cost Plus World Market, Rosauers, Made in Washington, Harvest House, Walter’s Fruit Ranch, Mel’s Nursery and Safeway stores.

Crush Rush begins

The Spokane Winery Association is hosting a new event to celebrate the harvest season.

Seventeen local wineries are hosting wine tours, grape-crushing demonstrations and a winery scavenger hunt.

Gather at least 10 of the items on the winery scavenger hunt list before Oct. 17 for a chance to win a private wine tasting for eight with several area winemakers. The scavenger list can be found online at www.spokanewineries.net or drop into a local winery for more information.
