In brief: Free yard debris collection planned

SPOKANE COUNTY – The Spokane Regional Clean Air Agency is sponsoring a free yard debris collection day Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at three locations in Spokane County. Residents may drop off waste including leaves, pine needles, small branches and other debris. Items not allowed include lumber, branches longer than 6 feet or thicker than 6 inches, root balls or trash.

Each location will also offer free seminars on backyard composting. Participants will receive a plastic home compost bin. Residents also can trade in old burn barrels, which are now banned, to receive a free compost bin.

The locations are: Fire District 8 Station 82, 12000 E. Palouse Highway, Valleyford; Fire District 9 Station 93, 9915 W. Charles Road, Nine Mile Falls; and Fire District 10 Station 4, Highway 2 and Brooks Road.

MORAN PRAIRIE – Jackson Peven of Boy Scout Troop 313 will give a presentation on how to reduce phosphorus in everyday life tonight at the Moran Prairie Library, 6004 S. Regal St., at 7 p.m.

The event is part of his Eagle Scout project and will discuss topics including how phosphorus impacts the environment, including the Browne Mountain stormwater facility; and the importance of using phosphorus-free fertilizers and household items.
