Fined The NBA fined Washington Wizards majority owner Ted Leonsis hours after he told local business leaders Wednesday that he expects the league soon will have a hard salary cap similar to the NHL’s model. The NBA says in a statement that Leonsis was fined $100,000 for “unauthorized public comments regarding the league’s collective bargaining negotiations.”

Sidelined New York Mets outfielder Carlos Beltran said he will miss the rest of the season after an MRI showed he has mild inflammation in his surgically repaired right knee. Beltran left the Mets’ game against Milwaukee on Tuesday night and had the test Wednesday.

• Orlando Magic point guard Jason Williams will have arthroscopic surgery on his left knee today and will miss about four weeks.

Extended Eight-year veteran Chris Kelsay no longer has to worry about whether he’ll fit in the Buffalo Bills new defensive scheme after the converted linebacker signed a four-year contract extension worth about $24 million. Kelsay said he signed the extension Tuesday and is locked up through the 2014 season.

Hospitalized Hall of Fame pitcher Bob Feller is resting comfortably at the Cleveland Clinic after getting a pacemaker. A family friend said that Feller, 91, underwent surgery to get the pacemaker on Monday. The baseball legend was diagnosed with leukemia last month and has been undergoing chemotherapy.

Suspended Third-ranked Boise State will be without starting linebacker/safety Winston Venable for the first half of this weekend’s game against New Mexico State. Venable was suspended by Western Athletic Conference Commissioner Karl Benson for a “flagrant foul” against Oregon State’s James Rodgers in the Broncos’ 37-24 win last Saturday.

Selected Right wing Brian Gionta was named the 28th captain of the Montreal Canadiens, becoming the second American to hold the position in the team’s 101-year history.
