Fire Department says driver used Sunny-D

Regardless of April Fool’s Day, the Spokane Valley Fire Department had a relatively slow week.

The department responded to 173 calls during the week of March 31 through April 6.

“The slow day was April Fool’s Day,” said Fire Marshal Kevin Miller.

On March 31, a car caught fire on Interstate 90 at Liberty Lake. Miller said the driver pulled over when smoke began pouring out of his engine and he opened the hood of his car.

The driver put the fire out using a gallon of Sunny-D he had in the car.

There were 145 emergency medical service and first-aid calls and three fires. One of the fires was a chimney fire, one was a baseboard fire.

The third was a portable toilet which caught fire in the 1100 block of South Wilbur Road on March 31.

There were nine false alarms and five motor vehicle collisions.

Miller said this time of year many folks are starting to burn their garden waste. There were three of those incidents this week. “That’s not allowed in most parts of Spokane County,” he said.

The department often sees more of these incidents when the weather gets better and more people are out working in their yards.
