Nuke fuel option overlooked

The recent crisis in Japan has again raised the fear of using nuclear power for energy production.

What is amazing to me is that there has been no mention of the use of thorium as a fuel source. It is more abundant than uranium, produces more energy per pound, will not “melt down,” requires much smaller containment structures and does not produce “weapons grade” byproducts. It is currently more expensive than coal or natural gas, but it is cleaner and in vast supply.
