In brief: Blackhawks back into postseason

NHL: The visiting Detroit Red Wings carved out a 4-3 victory, but the Chicago Blackhawks will still be able to defend the Stanley Cup.

After the loss, Chicago had to play the waiting game to see if they would make the playoffs. After the Dallas Stars lost later in the evening, the Blackhawks clinched the eighth-seed and will face top-seeded Vancouver in the first round. The Blackhawks have beaten the Canucks in the conference semifinals in each of the last two postseasons.

Jimmy Howard made 33 saves, the Red Wings killed a late power play and finally solved rookie goalie Corey Crawford.

Michael Frolik, Brent Seabrook and Keith had goals for Chicago.

• Wild keep Stars out of playoffs: In St. Paul, Minn., Antti Miettinen’s goal early in the third period against his former team gave Minnesota the lead and the Wild kept Dallas out of the playoffs with a 5-3 season-ending win.

When Chicago lost at home to Detroit earlier in the day, Dallas had a chance to grab the eighth and final spot in the Western Conference.

• Devils top Bruins: Vladimir Zharkov and Alexander Urbom scored third-period goals and the New Jersey Devils posted a 3-2 victory over the playoff-bound Boston Bruins at Newark, N.J.

Patrik Elias also scored for New Jersey and Johan Hedberg made 24 saves.

James, Heat finally defeat Celtics

NBA: LeBron James scored 27 points, Dwyane Wade added 14 and the Miami Heat moved past the visiting Boston Celtics into second place in the Eastern Conference with a 100-77 victory.

Miami had been 0-3 against the Celtics this season.

Chris Bosh added 13 points and eight rebounds for Miami.

Paul Pierce scored 24 points and Kevin Garnett added 21 for Boston.

• Bulls fight off Magic: Derrick Rose had 39 points and five assists and Luol Deng added 15 to help the visiting Chicago Bulls hold off the Orlando Magic 102-99.

Orlando’s Jameer Nelson appeared to tie it with a 3-pointer at the buzzer, but an official review upheld an initial call of no basket.

• Grizzlies hold Paul scoreless: O.J. Mayo scored 18 points, Marc Gasol added 16 and the visiting Memphis Grizzlies continued their march to the postseason with a 111-89 victory over the New Orleans Hornets.

Hornets All-Star guard Chris Paul was held scoreless for the first time in his career, missing all six of his field goal attempts. An 88-percent free throw shooter, Paul went to the line once and missed both shots. He did have 10 assists.

Marco Belinelli led the Hornets with 18 points.

• Lakers lose fifth straight: Kevin Durant scored 31 points, Russell Westbrook added 26 and the visiting Oklahoma City Thunder sent the Los Angeles Lakers to their fifth straight loss, 120-106.

Kobe Bryant scored 31 points, Pau Gasol added 26.

• Warriors’ Ellis hospitalized with head injury: Golden State Warriors guard Monta Ellis was sent to the hospital for further examination following a hard fall on his head in Sunday night’s 104-103 loss to the Sacramento Kings.

Ellis was fouled hard by DeMarcus Cousins on a driving layup with 1:32 remaining, falling head-first onto the floor. Ellis was briefly motionless and was so woozy when he stood up that teammates had to help him balance. He was helped to the locker room and did not return.

Ellis told teammates afterward he was feeling better.

No. 1 Wozniacki takes Family Circle Cup

Tennis: Top-ranked Caroline Wozniacki defeated Elena Vesnina 6-2, 6-3 to take the Family Circle Cup, capturing her third title this season at Charleston, S.C.

Wozniacki finished off a strong week in her first clay-court tournament of the season. She lost only one set, in the quarterfinals to Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, and held off Jelena Jankovic in the semis.

• Sweeting beats Nishikori in US Clay Court: Ryan Sweeting held off Japan’s Kei Nishikori 6-4 7-6 (3) to win the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship at Houston for his first ATP World Tour title.

The American became the fifth first-time winner on the ATP tour this year and the first U.S. Clay Court wild-card champion since Mardy Fish in 2006.

Sweeting, trailing 5-4 in the second set, served in the 10th game and had to overcome three set points before holding on a lob error by Nishikori that fell behind the line. The game lasted for 26 points.

• Gulbis beats Dolgopolov at Monte Carlo: In Monaco, Ernests Gulbis beat 14th-seeded Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine 6-1, 6-4 in the first round of the Monte Carlo Masters.

The Latvian hit nine aces and broke Dolgopolov’s serve twice in each set. He next meets Milos Raonic after the Canadian beat Michael Llodra of France 6-3, 0-6, 6-0.

Phelps 2nd in 200 IM and 100 freestyle

Miscellany: Michael Phelps had a disappointing finish in the Michigan Grand Prix, placing second in the 200 individual medley and 100 freestyle at Ann Arbor, Mich.

Phelps led the 200 individual medley with 50 meters left, but was passed by Ous Mellouli, who finished in 1:59.42. Phelps finished in 1:59.63.

• Vettel wins F1 Malaysian Grand Prix: In Sepang, Malaysia, Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel won the Formula One Malaysian Grand Prix, giving the German back-to-back wins.

• Officials change Interlagos after death: An escape area will be added on the corner where a Brazilian driver died in a truck series race a week ago at Interlagos, in an attempt to improve safety at the track hosting this year’s Formula One season finale.

Officials will remove a section of the stands and add a slowdown area outside the high-speed corner where 29-year-old Gustavo Sondermann was killed after a crash April 3.

• Van Summeren wins Paris-Roubaix cycling race: In Roubaix, France, Belgian rider Johan van Summeren won the Paris-Roubaix classic for the first time after breaking away in the closing stages and holding on for an unexpected victory.

• Kiptoo, Jeptoo win Paris Marathon: In Paris, Kenyans dominated the Paris Marathon by sweeping the first two placesin the men’s and women’s races.

Benjamin Kiptoo completed the 26.2 miles in 2 hours, 6 minutes, 31 seconds. Compatriot Bernard Kipyego overtook Eshetu Wendimu of Ethiopia to finish second, 45 seconds behind.

Priscah Jeptoo captured the women’s race in 2:22:55.

• Semenya claims two title: Caster Semenya was impressiveat the South African championships, winning the 800 meters and 1,500 meters in a buildup to defending her 800 title at the 2011 world championships at Durban, South Africa.
