Ferris alone in first in GSL baseball

Six days ago, Ferris pitcher Spencer Ansett was far from his best but had enough to pick up a win against Gonzaga Prep. Six days later, Ansett was at his best, and it was too much for the visiting Bullpups. The left-handed Ansett tossed a one-hitter and his teammates provided plenty of offense Tuesday as Ferris moved into sole possession of first place in the Greater Spokane League with a 13-0 run-rule shortened win in five innings on arguably the nicest day of the spring thus far. An opposite-field single by David Machtolf in the third inning was all the Bullpups (8-2) could muster at the plate. Ansett needed just 67 pitches, striking out seven while walking none. Two other Bullpups reached base by error. “It was pretty much the exact opposite (of last week),” Ansett said. “Last week nothing was working and this week it seemed like everything was working. I was able to work inside and out with the fastball and the changeup was good. I even got a few curveballs in there. It was a solid day.” Ferris (9-1) provided all the offense that Ansett (5-0) would need in the first inning. The Saxons batted around, scoring four runs on six hits. Travis Key had two of his four RBI on a single, Blake Bozett plated a run on a sacrifice fly and Taylor Jones had a run-scoring single. The Saxons added two more runs in the second. Ryan Krustangel’s triple brought in Ben Goodwin, who had reached on a lead-off double, and Key had a sacrifice fly. Krustangel had an RBI single in the third before the Saxons finished off their scoring with six more in the fourth. Goodwin had a two-run double, Key knocked in his fourth run with a single and Ben Pelle had a run-scoring single. “Doggone it, I don’t have much to say,” said G-Prep coach Brian Munhall, whose team occupied first place most of the first half of the league schedule. “When you mix in a couple of mistakes in the first inning and give them a chance to score and feel good, it was a lot like last week. We got beat by a darn good team.” “Everything came together today – good pitching and timely hitting,” Ferris coach Jim Sharkey said. “We really came out swinging the bats.” Goodwin led the Saxons at the plate. “We got on them early,” Goodwin said. “When Spence is pitching as well as he did today it’s easy to get up and swing with confidence.” Munhall said his team needs to have a short memory and return to what got it out to a fast start this season. “We had a lot of confidence, a little belief, a little swagger when we walked in (today) and they knocked it right out of us,” Munhall said. “So we’ve got to go back to being as competitive as we can. We’ve got to go back to where we started and what got us here.”
