Cougars sweep season series

Three pitchers combined on a five-hit performance as the Washington State Cougars defeated the Gonzaga Bulldogs 3-1 at Pullman to sweep the three-game season series on Tuesday.

Kellen Camus (2-0) got the victory for WSU (14-14), giving up one run to Gonzaga (19-10-1) in five innings of his first collegiate start. J.D. Leckenby added three shutout innings and Paris Shewey got the save. Derek Jones hit his team-leading fifth homer for WSU.

• Nathan Johnson threw a five-hit shutout and Landon Scott drilled a solo home run in the fourth inning to give host Whitworth a 1-0 win over visiting Lewis-Clark State in a nonconference game.

The Pirates (15-16) earned their first win over LCSC, ranked 18th in the NAIA this week, since the opener of the 2008 season.

LCSC (21-11) was shut out for the fourth consecutive game, a first for the program.

Softball

Dani Johnson picked up both wins and Elisabeth Roginski played a key role at the plate in CC Spokane’s 6-1, 1-0 NWAACC doubleheader sweep of Big Bend (12-12, 5-9). Roginski drove in two runs in the opener and brought home Jennica Ebel with the only run in the nightcap for the Sasquatch (11-12, 8-6).

Golf

Gonzaga senior Kyle Huus finished in a three-way tie for fourth and the Bulldogs claimed sixth as a team at the 15-team Braveheart Classic men’s golf tournament in Riverside, Calif.

Track and field

George Fox’s Alexis Arnold held on to her large lead from the first day in the heptathlon, but Willamette’s Evin Colignon rallied to win the decathlon during the Northwest Conference Combined Events Championships at Whitworth.

Arnold scored 4,456 points, winning by 190. Whitworth’s Tera Prosser finished eighth with 3,298 points.

Colignon, who trailed George Fox’s David Dillow by nine points after Monday’s competition, pulled away to a 278-point win over Nate Dillow of George Fox. Colignon had 6,419 points. Luke Matthews was the top Whitworth finisher at fourth with 5,939.

• Idaho’s Liga Velvere was selected as the Big Sky women’s track athlete of the week for conference-season best of 59.30 seconds in the 400 hurdles at the WAR IV regional meet at Spokane Falls CC.
