In brief: Families needed to host students

SPOKANE – Deborah Kirk, community coordinator with PAX academic exchange, is interviewing local families interested in hosting an international high school student for the upcoming school year.

PAX, a nonprofit foundation, provides U.S. high school home stays for students from more than 40 different countries in Europe, Asia and Latin America. Families are asked to provide students with meals, a place to sleep and study and a warm and supportive environment.

Photojournalist subject of talk

NORTHWEST – The Shadle Library, 2111 W. Wellesley Ave., will host a presentation on trailblazing photojournalist Margaret Bourke-White, on Saturday at 2 p.m.

The presentation by Lynne Iglitzin will feature one of the most famous women photojournalists of the 20th century. Bourke-White was a photographer for LIFE Magazine and opened doors for women in photography. Attendees will have an opportunity to see how Bourke-White went where no woman had gone before, taking images of the Great Depression, World War II and the steel mills of Cleveland, and telling their powerful stories.

Iglitzin is a specialist in women’s studies and political science and was a professor of political science at the University of Washington. The event is free and open to the public.

Jazz concert benefits kids

RIVERSIDE – Local jazz artists will host a benefit concert for disadvantaged kids at the Bing Crosby Theater, 901 W. Sprague Ave., on April 28, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

The evening will begin with special tastings of Northwest wines, Hallett’s chocolates and select coffee by Roast House. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. and will feature Don Goodwin’s Instant Superpower, an 18-piece jazz orchestra and the nine-piece band Groove Patrol with singer/songwriter Suhanna Cree.

Tickets range from $22.50, $16.50 and $12.50 and may be purchased at all TicketsWest locations or by calling (800) 325-SEAT.

Proceeds will benefit The Village Experience, a local group of musicians and music lovers that provides local low-income youths with musical instruments and lessons.

Group staging ‘Treasure Island’

SPOKANE VALLEY – Theater Arts for Children will perform the classic adventure story, “Treasure Island,” beginning April 22 at 7 p.m. at the Spokane Valley Partners building, 10814 E. Broadway Ave.

The show is based the novel by Robert Louis Stevenson and tells the tale of the villainous Long John Silver following young Jim across the ocean to search out a buried fortune on Treasure Island.

Other performances include April 23 at 7 p.m.; April 24 at 2 p.m.; April 29 at 7 p.m.; April 30 at 4 and 7 p.m.; May 6 and May 7 at 7 p.m.; and May 8 at 2 p.m.

Tickets are $10 per person and $5 for children age 12 and under.

Food drive needs collection help

SPOKANE COUNTY – Second Harvest is looking for volunteers for the National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive May 14.

Volunteers are needed to at each of the major postal stations in Spokane County to unload bags of nonperishable food from both mail trucks and volunteer vehicles and load donations into Second Harvest’s trucks. Volunteers will also be needed to help drive postal carrier routes and pick up bags of nonperishable food left at mailboxes. Driver/runner teams will be needed.

Grange hosts potluck, spud bar

GREEN BLUFF – The Green Bluff Grange, 9809 Green Bluff Road, will host its annual spring dinner and scholarship fundraiser Saturday. The event is sponsored by the Green Bluff Grange Home Economics Club.

The potluck will begin at 6 p.m. with a silent auction. Raffle tickets will be sold for a quilt made by the club. Tickets are $1 each and proceeds will fund scholarships awarded by the club.
