Lesson in economics

While I totally agree with James Lanham (Letters, April 10), he didn’t address what I believe is the real issue for limiting resident students and increasing nonresident students. And that is, “the bottom line.”

The cost to the universities is the same, be it a resident student or a nonresident student. The difference is, the University of Washington collects $16,628 more for the nonresident student. WSU collects $5,211 more for the nonresident student. These figures are from the universities’ websites.

It has nothing to do with education, but rather, which student is more profitable for the university.
