WVHS dancers take state prize

The West Valley High School Dance Team stepped away with first place in the drill category at the state competition held in Yakima on March 25.

Along with the first place trophy in drill, the E-Gals also took second place in both the pom and hip-hop categories.

“Adviser Jodee Cahalan shared that this year the team performed a very progressive type of drill dance that could have gone either way,” said district spokeswoman Sue Shields. “Much to their elation, the routine wowed the judges.”

College field trip

Sixth-graders from East Valley and Mountain View middle schools in the East Valley School District will tour two area colleges thanks to a grant from the College Success Foundation.

The students will spend half of the school day on Tuesday at Spokane Community College and the other half at Gonzaga University.

Students in two sixth-grade classes at EVMS and four sixth-grade classes at MVMS have been engaged in the “I’m Going to College” curriculum before they visit the schools.

Meet the applicants

The Freeman School District will present an opportunity to meet the four finalists for the position of superintendent Monday at 6:15 p.m. in the middle school gymnasium, 15001 S. Jackson Road, Rockford.

Superintendent Sergio Hernandez will retire at the end of June.

The four applicants are Thomas Gresch, principal at Cheney High School; Bill Motsenbocker, superintendent of Liberty Schools; Randy Russell, principal at Coeur d’Alene High School; and Kelly Shea, executive director of human services in the Mead School District.

Kudos

Kevin Stanley, a senior at Central Valley High School, has been awarded a $2,500 President’s Scholarship from Eastern Washington University.

Students who have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.8 or higher or who have earned a score of 1250 or higher on the SAT are eligible for the scholarship.

Stanley plans to attend EWU in the fall.
