Roundup: Loyola Marymount ties Zags for first in WCC baseball

Alex Gillingham (6-2) worked 8 1/3 innings and Loyola Marymount jumped on Tyler Olson for five RBI doubles Saturday as the Lions (20-13, 4-1 West Coast Conference) moved back into a tie for first place with a 9-4 win over Gonzaga (20-11-1, 4-1) at Los Angeles.

Olson (5-2) had won five consecutive games, but the Lions struck for three runs in the second and five in the fourth, when Joe Vierra had a two-run homer.

Tyler Chism and Eric Lane had three hits apiece for the Bulldogs.

• Joey DeMichele went 3 for 4 with three RBIs as Arizona State (24-9, 7-4 Pac-10) cruised to an 8-2 win over Washington State (14-16, 2-9) at Tempe, Ariz.

Winner Kramer Champlin (4-1) allowed two earned runs in 6 1/3 innings, striking out five. WSU freshman Jason Monda led off the second with his first career homer.

• Justin Jones (5-2) pitched eight effective innings and Tony Renda had a three-run double during a five-run second as No. 16 California (22-9, 8-3 Pac-10) notched an 8-2 win at Washington (10-22, 2-6).

• Eric Anderson (2-0) pitched a three-hitter in the second game to help Whitworth (16-17, 9-8 NWC) salvage a split with host Pacific (20-12-1, 13-7) at Forest Grove, Ore.

Rob Dittrick (8-2) pitched a complete-game four-hitter in the opener as the Boxers won 2-0. Gerhard Muelheims went 4 for 6 with four runs in the second game.

• Chris Allen and Jordan Wilson combined on a seven-hitter in the opener and Brenden Herzer had three hits in the second game as Community Colleges of Spokane (15-13, 5-7 NWAACC) posted a 2-0, 7-6 sweep of Wenatchee Valley (2-17, 1-11) at Spokane Falls CC.

Seth Peterson singled and tripled in the second game for CCS.

Track and field

Washington State’s Joe Abbott ran a season-best 1 minute, 48.95 seconds to place third in the men’s Olympic Development Elite 800 meters at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif. WSU’s Anna Layman placed fifth in the women’s Olympic Development Elite 800 in a season-best 2:06.12.

Idaho’s Liga Velvere placed second in the 400 hurdles in 58.61.

• Idaho’s Lauren Schaffer ran a career-best 2:06.53 to win the women’s 800 at the Long Beach State Invitational at Cerritos, Calif.

WSU’s Shaquana Logan placed third in the 100 hurdles (14.06).

• Carter Comito broke a Whitworth record with a men’s discus throw of 194 feet, 11 inches at the Spike Arlt Invitational in Ellensburg.

Comito unleashed his meet record with his sixth and final attempt. His throw, the longest at the NCAA Division III level this season, broke Fred Shaffer’s mark of 185-3 1/2 set in 1961.

Whitworth’s Sam Wright placed second in the discus and won the men’s shot put (50-7 1/4).

Softball

Alex Watilo (14-4) threw a three-hitter in the opener and Courtney Galli went 3 for 4 with three RBIs in the second game as Willamette (18-16, 15-11 NWC) posted a 5-0, 8-3 sweep at Whitworth (17-15, 15-9).

Talissa Huntsman’s three-run homer to right-center capped the Bearcats’ scoring in the opener. Julia Johnson had an RBI double during Whitworth’s two-run fourth in the second game.

• Stacie Chambers homered twice and drove in five runs to lead Arizona (35-8, 6-2 Pac-10) to a 13-5 win over Washington (30-5, 5-3) at Tucson, Ariz.

• CC Spokane (13-13) defeated Olympic (2-5) 9-3 to complete a long opening day at the NWAACC crossover in Selah, Wash.

In the opener, Dani Johnson checked the Edmonds Tritons (0-14) on four hits for five innings for a 21-0 win. Breanna Lookabill and Elisabeth Roginski homered.

In the second game, Rebecca Johnson pitched a four-hitter and the Everett Trojans (13-9) scored four runs in the sixth to turn back CCS 6-4.

• Shelby Gonzales set North Idaho’s career homer record in the first game and Ashley Moon hit her first grand slam in the third game as North Idaho (28-21, 21-17) recorded a 13-9, 9-4, 12-4 sweep of visiting Western Nevada (6-28, 6-28) in Scenic West Athletic Conference play.

Gonzales’ 29th career homer highlighted the Cardinals’ four-run first in the opener. Moon had five RBIs in the final game, including her slam in the second inning.

Women’s tennis

No. 1 Rachel Burns, No. 2 Alli Marshall and No. 4 Katie Staudinger won singles matches as host Whitworth (17-2) defeated Willamette 5-2 in a Northwest Conference tournament semifinal.

The Pirates will meet Linfield at 10 a.m. today in the championship. Linfield defeated Whitman 5-2 in the other semifinal.

Men’s tennis

No. 1 Joshua Wong and No. 3 Cody Ferguson won singles matches and teamed up to win the No. 2 doubles as Willamette defeated Whitworth 5-1 in a Northwest Conference tournament semifinal at Walla Walla.

Willamette will play host Whitman in today’s final. Henry Williams and Dustin McConnell won at No. 3 doubles for Whitworth (11-10).

Men’s golf

Sophomore Damian Telles tied for fourth place and led Idaho to a fifth-place finish at the 18-team PING Cougar Classic at Riverside Country Club in Provo, Utah.

Telles shot a final-round 4-under-par 68 to finish at 8-under 208, three shots behind champion Zachary Blair of host Brigham Young.

Idaho finished at 4-under 860, 13 shots behind winner Colorado State.

Hank Frame and Nick Ellis tied for 19th at 217 to help Washington State (870) tie for eighth.

Men’s rowing

Washington State’s varsity 8 won the Fawley Cup for just the third time and host Gonzaga won three of the other four races during the 23rd annual event at Silver Lake.

WSU’s varsity 8 finished the 2,000-meter course in 6 minutes, 1.83 seconds.

Women’s rowing

Gonzaga won three of four races, including the varsity 8 (6:37.7), at the Western Washington Regatta on Lake Samish in Bellingham.

In the marquee race, the Bulldogs broke away at 1,300 meters to edge WWU, the six-time NCAA Division II national champions.
