Area roundup: Vandal wins WAC title in golf

Idaho’s Kayla Mortellaro won the Western Athletic Conference golf championship Sunday in Mesa, Ariz.

Mortellaro, a junior, shot a 1-over 72 Sunday and finished the three-day event at 1-under 212. She repeated as WAC player of the year.

Joining Mortellaro on the all-conference team was the Vandals’ Teo Poplawski.

San Jose State won the team title with an 884. Idaho was sixth at 926.

• The Whitworth men and women finished in second place at the Pacific Invitational in North Plains, Ore.

The Pirates men finished second to Puget Sound, while the women finished second to George Fox. The men finished with a 601, seven strokes back, while the women finished with a 703, 49 strokes back.

Jesse Salzwedal was the top finisher for the Whitworth men, placing third with a two-day total of 146, 13 strokes behind medalist Max Bonk of Pacific.

For the women, Whitworth’s Emily Guthrie placed second with a two-day total of 164, 11 strokes behind medalist Kelsey Morrison of George Fox.

The Northwest Conference championships are this weekend in the Tri-Cities.

• Washington State shot a 323 as a team during the first round of the Pac-10 Championships in Tempe, Ariz., good for 10th place. USC and Stanford tied for first at 282. Emma Betland had the best individual score for the Cougars, with her 6-over 78 putting her in a tie for 37th place.

Baseball

Billy Moon’s (University) two-run double broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning as 24th-ranked Gonzaga beat Loyola Marymount 7-1 in West Coast Conference action in Los Angeles.

Marco Gonzales (6-2) allowed one run on three hits over 71/3 innings for his sixth consecutive win for the Bulldogs (21-11-1, 5-1 WCC). The freshman struck out five.

Tyler Chism had three hits, including a double, for Gonzaga, and Cameron Edman had two doubles.

• Arizona State collected 14 hits in a 10-4 win over Washington State in Tempe, Ariz., that gave the Sun Devils a three-game Pac-10 sweep.

Cody Bartlett and Matt Argyropoulos had two-run hits for the Cougars (14-17, 2-10 Pac-10).

• Nick Tasaka scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 11th inning as Pacific beat Whitworth 6-5 in the finale of a Northwest Conference series in Forest Grove, Ore.

Michael Takemura went 5 for 5 with two RBIs for the Pirates (16-18, 9-9 NWC). Nathan Johnson (4-4) took the loss despite allowing one run on three hits over 41/3 innings in relief.

• After being held to one hit over seven innings, Washington scored three runs in the final two innings but the comeback effort fell short in a 4-3 loss to No. 16 California in Seattle. The Huskies (10-23, 2-7 Pac-10) left the potential tying and winning runs on base in the ninth.

Softball

Whitworth and Willamette split a Northwest Conference doubleheader in Spokane, with the Bearcats winning 5-4 in nine innings in the opener and the Pirates taking Game 2 8-1.

Sami Parr went 5 for 8 on the day for Whitworth (18-16, 16-10 NWC), and Emily Anderson (11-6) pitched a complete-game victory in Game 2. She allowed one run on six hits and went 2 for 4 at the plate.

• No. 7/8 Washington dropped its first conference series of the season, losing 6-1 to No. 8/7 Arizona in Tucson, Ariz. Victoria Hayward’s RBI single in the seventh accounted for the lone run for the Huskies (30-6, 5-4 Pac-10).

• Community Colleges of Spokane jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning but it was all Bellevue College from there in an 8-3 win at a crossover tournament in Selah, Wash. Elisabeth Roginski (Shadle Park) and Regin Gallagher (Mead) hit home runs for the Sasquatch (12-14).

Tennis

Linfield won four of the five completed singles matches for a 5-3 win over Whitworth in the championship of the Northwest Conference women’s tennis tournament in Spokane.

The Pirates (17-3), who won the regular season championship, saw Erica Bosman and Katie Staudinger win at No. 2 doubles and Megan Wingfield and Claire Hemming win at No. 3 doubles to take a 2-0 lead. The Wildcats then won the No. 1 doubles and No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches to take a 3-2 lead. Bosman’s win at No. 3 singles tied it for Whitworth, but Linfield then won No. 4 and No. 5 singles to clinch the championship.

Swimming

Whitworth junior Rory Buck placed highly in his three individual events at the South African national championships. He finished third in the 100-meter breaststroke Tuesday, fourth in the 50-meter breaststroke Thursday and second in the 200-meter breaststroke Saturday. All three of his times rank in the top 100 in the world this year.
