BOISE — A new Idaho play is based on former Sen. Larry Craig’s 2007 arrest in an airport bathroom sex sting.

The Idaho Statesman reports the 90-minute drama was part of the Boise Contemporary Theater’s new works reading series Monday. The play, “Off the Record,” is about an airport police officer who detains a U.S. senator after a toe-tapping incident in a public restroom.

Lynn Allison’s play takes a fictional turn as the officer and the senator engage in a conversation about American attitudes on homosexuality.

Craig, an Idaho Republican, was arrested in June 2007 by an undercover police officer conducting a sting operation against men cruising for sex at the Minneapolis airport. As his political career disintegrated, Craig insisted he was not gay and the officer had misconstrued his foot-tapping.

I wonder if this play will focus on the immoral aspect - not of being homosexual, which has nothing to do with morals - but of the attempted infidelity of this married senator.

When this story first broke, the majority of people criticized him for soliciting a homosexual, while ignoring the idea that he was trying to cheat on his spouse, gay or not.

To most people, being homosexual is far more outrageous and disgusting than cheating on your wife. Sad.

    “I am not gay.”

    Right. It’s the “wide stance.”

    Talk about deep denial.

    Good point, Thoreau.

Good points, Thoreau… but I would amend it to say “to most people of a certain age.” Younger folks generally don’t care so much about homosexuality; I think the fact of the infidelity would bother them more than the gayness of it. (I know I’m not speaking for all younger (or older) people)

I think Craig’s primary offense was hypocrisy. It’s the blatant and unrelenting hypocrisy of the ruling class that is so revolting. Teddy Kennedy, anyone? And tell us again about your first marriage, Uncle Newt? Chris and Barney?

^ make that first TWO marriages, Uncle Newt. (Not sure who Chris & Barney are)

Manly is quite correct…the real point was Senator Craig’s blatant hypocrisy….a conservative ‘family values’ candidate living a complete lie. Very much the same issue that sunk Mayor West in his quest to retain his office after the truth became known. They both completely lost the respect of the voting public…not because of their homosexuality, but because of their demonstrated dishonesty. They disgraced their constituencies, and communities, via the falsehoods they’d willingly constructed.

The closet is a horrible place to live.
