DeHaas delivers clutch hit in CdA baseball win

Kaleb DeHaas remembered he had done it before, and against the same team.

The Coeur d’Alene senior catcher found himself at the plate in the bottom of the sixth with the score tied 4-4 against the crosstown rival and the potential winning run at third base with no outs.

DeHaas had a game-winning hit in a similar situation against Lake City last spring. And like a year ago, DeHaas delivered Tuesday, lining an RBI double off the top of the left-field fence as the Vikings (13-1, 5-0) slipped past the visiting Timberwolves 5-4 in a 5A Inland Empire League baseball game at Ted Page Field.

“I thought about (last year) a little bit,” DeHaas said. “I was just thinking get a pitch up in the zone that I can lift and get the guy in from third if he has to tag up. I got a nice changeup down the middle and lined it off the fence.”

The Vikings’ offense was limited to two players – DeHaas, who had two hits and two RBIs, and starting pitcher Colin Comack, who had two hits and three RBIs.

CdA coach Nick Rook lifted Comack after five innings for ace Jake Pereira, who had no difficulty setting down the final six LC batters to improve to 6-0.

The Viks scored three unearned runs in the first inning, two on a double by Comack and one on a single by DeHaas.

“If we get through that inning I think it’s a different game,” LC coach Al Bevacqua said. “We just ran out of innings. That’s the best way to put it.”

LC (6-7, 2-4) evened the score at 3-3 in the third when starting pitcher Jason Pattis knocked in two runs with a two-out single.

CdA moved ahead at 4-3 in the bottom of the inning when Comack got a run-scoring single on an 0-2 pitch.

The T-Wolves tied it at 4-4 in the fourth on a hit by Mitch Bevacqua.
