Sherritt joins CFL’s Eskimos

The Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League have signed former Eastern Washington University linebacker J.C. Sherritt, the Edmonton Journal reported.

Sherritt, 5-11 and 212 pounds, won the 2010 Buck Buchanan Award as the top defensive player in the Football Championship Subdivision. He is EWU’s career leader in total tackles.

Rogers wins another U.S. title

Wrestling: Mead junior Jordan Rogers won a Cadet Nationals Greco-Roman title for the second year in a row to earn a berth on the national team that will compete in Hungary on Aug. 25-28.

Rogers, competing at 167.5 pounds, was named the Outstanding Wrestler at the Akron, Ohio, tournament.

His brother, freshman Chandler, was third at 152. Central Valley freshman Colton Orrino was third at 119. Ryan Gabel, a University sophomore, did not place in the top three at 127.75.

The Cadet (ages 15-17) event continues through Saturday with freestyle competition.

Phay withdraws as candidate

Basketball: North Idaho College men’s basketball coach Jared Phay has withdrawn his name from consideration for the coaching job at Lewis-Clark State College.

Phay, who has been the head coach at NIC for seven years, interviewed at LCSC last week.

The Lewiston school announced last week that Phay, ex-LCSC and University of Idaho coach George Pfeifer and Lambuth University (Jackson, Tenn.) coach Kevin Burton were the three finalists. Pfeifer spent the last three seasons at Montana State-Billings before being fired.

Turiaf coming to Hoopfest

Basketball: Former Gonzaga standout and current New York Knicks player Ronny Turiaf is partnering with Hoopfest to build an outdoor basketball court at a location to be determined, raise funds for his Heart to Heart Foundation and make several appearances at Nike Center Court during the Spokane 3-on-3 tournament.

“A Night with Ronny Turiaf” benefit will be held at 7 p.m. June 24, at The Lincoln Center. Turiaf’s foundation provides health services, including EKGs, heart surgeries and defibrillators to children in need.
