College baseball: WSU shuts out third-ranked Oregon State

James Wise and two relievers combined on a four-hit shutout and the Washington State Cougars (15-19, 3-12) defeated the third-ranked Oregon State Beavers 2-0 in Pacific-10 Conference action Saturday afternoon in Corvallis, Ore.

Wise (4-4) allowed three hits and five walks in 7 2/3 innings. Anthony Drobnick retired the only batter he faced in the eighth inning and Paris Shewey allowed one hit in a scoreless ninth to earn his seventh save of the season.

WSU took a 1-0 lead off Beavers starter Josh Osich (5-1) in the top of the third when Cody Bartlett drew a one-out walk. Brett Jacobs and Derek Jones ripped back-to-back singles to score Bartlett.

The Cougars scored the final run of the game in the top of the sixth. Taylor Ard and Jason Monda ripped one-out singles and Ard scored on an infield hit by Jay Ponciano.

It was WSU’s first shutout win over Oregon State (29-8, 10-2) since March 22, 1998, and the Cougs’ first shutout win in Corvallis since April 28, 1990.

• The Washington Huskies (12-25, 3-9) scored five runs in the fifth inning – after two were out and nobody on base – and breezed to an 8-2 victory over the Southern Cal Trojans (18-21, 8-7) in Pac-10 play in Los Angeles.

Joe Meggs’ three-run homer capped Washington’s five-run outburst in the fifth.

Freshman Austin Voth (2-4) picked up the win for the Huskies. He allowed one run on three hits and two walks in seven innings.

• Kyle Barraclough (4-4) became the third straight starter to go the distance for Saint Mary’s and the visiting Gaels (17-17, 5-4) held on for a 7-6 victory over the 24th-ranked Gonzaga Bulldogs in the rubber game of a West Coast Conference three-game series.

Cameron Edman went 3 for 3 and hit a pair of home runs for Gonzaga, which led 4-0 after three innings and 5-4 after six.

Reliever Cody Martin (2-1) surrendered a pair of ninth-inning runs to take the loss for Gonzaga.

• Tyler Pfeffer went 4 for 4 with a home run, double and four RBIs to power the Whitworth Pirates (18-19, 11-10) to a 9-4 win over the visiting Willamette Bearcats (19-17-1, 10-11) in Northwest Conference action.

Nathan Johnson (5-4) allowed two runs on seven hits in five innings of relief to notch the win for the Pirates.

J.R. Jarrell went 2 for 4 and scored a pair of runs for the Whits.

Max Stepan hit his 11th homer of the season for Willamette. It was a solo shot.

• The Yakima Valley Yaks (21-4, 15-1) banged out 20 hits on the day and rolled to a 6-4, 4-0 doubleheader sweep over the visiting Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch (16-16, 6-10) in Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges action.

Catcher Donnie Santos led the way for the Sasquatch with three hits.
