Cougars sweep Cougars

Kellen Camus and J.D. Leckenby fired four shutout innings apiece and the Washington State Cougars (17-19) held on for a 4-3 victory and a nonconference doubleheader sweep over the visiting Brigham Young Cougars (20-18) on Tuesday.

Bret DeRooy (4-1) and Richie Ochoa combined on a four-hitter and WSU beat BYU 3-0 in the first game. DeRooy went the first six innings and allowed two hits with three strikeouts.

Taylor Ard had three hits, including a double, on the day to lead the WSU offense.

Awards

Eastern Washington Eagles javelin thrower Aaron Mettler was named the Big Sky Conference field athlete of the week after he placed fourth at the Oregon Relays with a lifetime-best mark of 225 feet, 3 inches.

• EWU sophomore Fernando Mussolini was named to the Big Sky Conference men’s tennis first team.
