Mullan apologizes to Zakuani

Soccer: Colorado Rapids midfielder Brian Mullan has apologized for the hard tackle on the Seattle Sounders FC Steve Zakuani that broke the midfielder’s leg and likely ended his season.

Mullan released a statement Wednesday, saying he regrets that Zakuani was injured by the tackle and is “deeply sorry to Steve and all those impacted by his injury.”

Mullan was given a red card in last Friday’s match when he barged into Zakuani near the sideline. Zakuani’s right leg was caught underneath him, breaking his tibia and fibula.

He was taken off the field on a stretcher and had surgery at Rose Medical Center in Denver. Zakuani returned to Seattle Tuesday night.

Major League Soccer is expected to announce additional discipline for Mullan.

Didn’t receive the call she wanted

Baseball: Milwaukee Brewers slugger Ryan Braun has tried to reached out and offer a little comfort to an embarrassed fan.

During last Friday’s 14-7 win over Houston, a young woman held up a sign that said, “Marry Me, Ryan,” with her phone number.

The young woman, who says her name is Robin, later told a reporter from Fox Sports Wisconsin that she thought including the number was a good idea.

Maybe not. She was inundated with more than 200 calls and 600 text messages in just a few hours after the sign was flashed on the game broadcast.

Braun has a girlfriend, but tried to give Robin a call afterward to say “thanks but no thanks.” With all the callers, however, Robin’s voicemail was full. Braun says he would be happy for all the attention to pass.
