Women rule the day at Pelluer Invite

Women stole the show in the 40th annual Pelluer Invitational track and field meet on Friday at Eastern Washington’s Roos Field.

The three meet records that were set and the day’s only double winner came in the women’s division.

Eastern senior Krystal Deyo broke her record in winning the 100 meters in 11.97 seconds. Her previous mark, set in 2009, was 11.99.

Rhianna Grossman of Carroll broke the meet and stadium record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, timing 11 minutes, 11.33 seconds, and Montana’s 4x400 relay team won with a record 3:49.55.

Erica Chaney of EWU doubled up in the shot put (50 feet, 2 3/4 inches) and discus (151-1).

Eastern athletes won 14 of the 34 individual events in the meet in which there is no team scoring.

• Washington State and Washington split a dual meet in Seattle between the rivals.

The 21st-ranked WSU women, piling up points in the field events, beat the Huskies 92-71, the Cougars’ 12th win in the last 13 meetings. Senior All-American Marissa Tschida repeated as javelin winner with a season-best 177-2, the Cougars went 1-4 in the shot and Holly Parent led a 1-2 finish in the high jump. Dominique Lauderdale doubled in the 100 and 200 for UW.

James Alaka’s 100-200 double helped the Washington men overcome WSU’s field event strength to edge the Cougars 83-80. WSU got doubles from Stephan Scott-Ellis in the long and triple jumps and Joe Bartlett in the shot and discus.

Baseball

A two-run home run by Matt Argyropoulos in the first inning and a solo shot by Derek Jones in the seventh sparked Washington State to a 5-2 win over Washington at Bailey-Brayton Field in the opener of a three-game weekend Pac-10 series.

The Huskies (12-26, 3-10 Pac-10) outhit the Cougars (18-19, 4-12) 10-6 with eight players contributing. Joe Meggs went 3 for 4 with a pair of doubles.

• Ryan Carpenter pitched no-hit ball into the seventh, finishing with a five-hitter, in leading Gonzaga to an 8-0 win at Santa Clara in the opener of a West Coast Conference series.

Billy Moon was 3 for 5 and Tyler Chism and Cameron Edman were both 2 for 5, all three driving in a run, as GU (23-13-1, 7-3 WCC) capitalized on five errors by Santa Clara (15-23, 2-8) to score five unearned runs.

Rowing

Gonzaga placed second to San Diego in all three races and wound up second overall in the West Coast Conference Women’s Championships in Rancho Cordova, Calif.

GU senior Sami Koppinger was named all-conference.

Softball

Amber James’ two-run home run in the fifth inning gave Community Colleges of Spokane a 5-4 win over Columbia Basin in the opener of an Eastern Region doubleheader at Fort Wright.

The Hawks (20-16, 11-9) rallied for three runs in the top of the sixth for a 7-5 win over CCS (17-17, 12-8) in the second game.

• Shelby Gonzales (Moses Lake) only got to swing the bat once all day, but it was enough for the North Idaho College sophomore to set the school career home run record.

She hit her 30th in the second game of NIC’s (32-23, 25-19) 15-2, 9-2 Scenic West Athletic Conference sweep of Colorado Northwestern (2-45, 2-39) in Rangely, Colo.

Colorado NW walked Gonzales five straight times in the first game. On her first at-bat in the second game, the pitcher left one over the plate and Gonzales hit it over the fence. She then was walked four more times.

• Sophomore pitcher Teagan Gerhart hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh to give No. 13 Stanford (34-10, 7-6) a 2-1 Pac-10 victory over visiting No. 11 Washington (31-9, 6-7).

Tennis

The 51st-ranked Idaho men, with five of its seven players collecting two wins each, blanked Utah State 4-0 to move into the Western Athletic Conference semifinals in Boise.

Third-seeded UI faces second-seeded New Mexico State.

Golf

Trent Sanders of Washington State is tied for fourth at 1-under 139, and Washington has three among the top 13, including Chris Williams of Moscow, who is tied for 11th at 1-over 141, but the Cougars and Huskies have their work cut out in the Pac-10 Men’s Championships in Stanford, Calif.

Southern California has a one shot lead at 4-over 709 with WSU tied for sixth at 723 and two-time defending champion Washington another shot back.
