University, Gonzaga Prep move on at state Legion

Tournament hosts University and Gonzaga Prep survived loser-out games against fellow Spokane teams during Thursday’s third day of the Legion Junior State tournament.

Derek Walker went 4 for 6 with eight runs batted in as U-Hi knocked out Ferris 24-6 at U-Hi. Walker hit a grand slam during a 15-run seventh inning. Monte Thies added four runs and four RBIs for U-Hi.

At G-Prep, Steven Machtolf scattered five hits in five innings and Gabriel Renourd went 3 for 4 with two runs and two RBIs as G-Prep knocked out Asotin County 12-1.

Volleyball

Eastern Washington has been selected to finish in sixth place by coaches in the Big Sky Conference preseason poll.

The Eagles received 34 points. Northern Colorado is the top choice, with seven first-place votes and 63 points.

Women’s soccer

Gonzaga has been tabbed for a tie for last place by coaches in the West Coast Conference preseason poll.

The Zags received 13 points. Portland earned top honors, with 61 points and six first-place votes.

Football

The Spokane Shock announced that wide receivers Markee White and Greg Orton have been placed on the Other League Exempt List so that they can rejoin their United Football League teams. White will rejoin the Hartford Colonials while Orton heads to the Omaha Nighthawks.
