Gonzaga Prep, University eliminated at state Legion

Gonzaga Prep and University saw their baseball seasons end Friday at the Legion Junior State tournament, and both lost in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Christopher Burt’s run-scoring single in the seventh gave Burlington a 6-5 win at G-Prep.

G-Prep had tied the game at 5 in the top of the seventh when Christopher Szambelan tripled in Steven Machtolf and scored on a wild pitch.

U-Hi’s season ended when Richland scored three runs in the seventh for a 4-3 win at U-Hi.

U-Hi starting pitcher Casey Fink allowed six hits and three earned runs in six innings. Monte Thies worked two-thirds of an inning and was tagged with the loss. Connor Klein led U-Hi’s offense, finishing 2 for 4 with one run.

Golf

Chris Williams (UW/Moscow High), the stroke play champion, lost to the world’s No. 1-ranked amateur, UCLA’s Patrick Cantlay, 3 and 2 to open match play at the 109th Western Amateur Championship at Glenview, Ill.

Volleyball

Western Athletic Conference coaches tabbed Idaho to finish in fourth place in their preseason poll.

The Vandals received 33 points to trail Hawaii (49), New Mexico State (41) and Utah State (34). Vandals sophomore outside hitter Allison Walker made the preseason All-WAC team.
