Alcohol, speed blamed in fatal accident on Broadway
A driver was arrested this morning for vehicular homicide after the driver’s passenger died in an accident about 5:50 a.m. on Broadway Avenue near Freya Street.
Michael S. Lindsly, 46, was undergoing treatment today at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center and is expected to be into Spokane County Jail following his release from the hospital, Spokane police said this afternoon.
He suffered serious injuries that were not considered to be life-threatening, police said.
Investigators said alcohol and speed were involved in the accident along curves just east of Freya Street. Broadway was closed from Havana Street to Alki Way this morning to allow investigators to gather evidence, said Officer Teresa Fuller in a news release.
Witnesses at the scene said the driver was headed west at a high rate of speed, probably between 70 and 100 mph. The driver failed to negotiate the curve at Alki, and the sedan ended up resting on its top off of the roadway next to a building. The passenger died in the wreckage.
Spokane fire crews initially used shoring blocks to stabilize the car.
The driver was pulled from the vehicle in about 15 minutes with the use of extrication equipment, fire officials said.
Lindsly was taken to Sacred Heart, where evidence of alcohol consumption was determined, authorities said.
The names of the deceased and the driver were being withheld pending notification of family members of the deceased.
